I had a '79 Continental w/460 that was my grandfather's and that was fun. The last of the "big" Lincolns. After that they were essentially Crown Vics and cost cutting measures were in full effect. |
Actually it is a good deal.

engines, and were very thrifty and reliable. They were still barge like in their handling but nothing like the huge '79s. I had a 1988 Crown Vic and it was the cheapest car to own and maintain I have EVER owned. Probably cheaper to drive, dollar per mile, than even a Toyota Corolla, when all was said and done. Plus, roomier and and MUCH safer too. Engine, drive train, cooling system, HVAC, electrics, everything, totally bulletproof. First 115k miles, all it ever needed was tires battery, tuneup, coolant and oil changes, and the odd alignment. VERY cheap to insure, too. These cars were designed for police and taxi use, which is brutal, and can still run 350,000 miles with no problems. The Lincoln town car was just as tough, maybe a little baroque in styling, but these were, and still are, today, the livery car of choice. Cast iron V8 push rod V8, body on frame, live rear axle, rear wheel drive large luxury sedans were something Detroit was always pretty good at building and those 1988 Lincolns were a pretty darn good example of them. A great deal if you can find a good one. Definately worth a shot if it's nearby and it's FREE!! |
