Has anyone here gone through medical school?

I am strongly leaning towards going to medical school and am unsure whether or not I would be able to get into Indiana University (IN's only med. school). Anyways, I was kicking around the idea of going to the caribbean for med school. Does anyone here have an MD or DO and know anything about these schools. I've done research and it seems that carib. MDs are discriminated against, but I wanted to know if anyone knows anything about this route. I am particularly looking into St. George's SOM at Grenada since it has the best reputation and has been around the longest.

Thanks
David

I haven't but my wife has and several of our friends have as well. Look into board exams and regulations. It can be hard getting an MD outside of the US and then securing a residency position there afterwards - standards differ from country to country.

I've been good friends with a couple of people who were going thru medical school. I also knew a guy who decided to go to medical school in the Caribbean. I lost track of him after he did that so I don't know his career track upon completion. I have a vague impression that he did end up being an MD in the US.
Why is Indiana so important for med school as opposed to other US med schools.

IN is important because one's state school is generally the easiest to get into because they really only accept in-state students. IU is also very competitive for being a state-school. It has an acceptance rate of (I believe) less than 15%.

The Carib. schools I am looking at are accredited in all 50 states. You're actually only on the island for 2 years. Then you go to affiliated hospitals in the US for the clinical portion (last 2 yrs. of med. school).

I was just curious to see if anyone here could shine some light on the realities of going to such a school.

Zeus, what sort of medicine does your wife practice? Also, do you know where she went to school?

Thanks
David

I went through the University of Louisville Medical School back in 1982.

I was on my way to the library and had to cut through the med school to get there. Good luck to you!

My wife went to medical school up here in Canada. She specializes in Medical Genetics.

I have a friend that went to medical school in Ireland. Now practices ER in Halifax, NS.

I would try and speak to some alumni from whatever school you are considering and get their input re: residency, securing decent clinical rotations, etc. Probably depends also on what specialty you are considering.

My brother is a doc...head of the Infectious Diseases department at the hospital along with a private practice.

He got a BS in Microbiology at the University of Illinois followed by an MD at the Southern Illinois School of Medicine. For some reason, U of I rarely accepted their own undergraduates for their own medical school.

Did his residency at the Mayo Clinic at Rochester MN. Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.

I kept up with his progress throughout...one tough road to hoe (and I don't mean the nappy-headed ones)!

Visited him during Christmas. Only saw him for about a total of 7 hours during the five days we spent at his home.

Do all doctors work those kinds of hours?!!!

Yes. A wife and three daughters. I don't believe they see him any more than I did!

I've never understood the concept of killing people who were trying to become doctors. I'm not sure what the rationale behind that is. Maybe that's why so many of them act like *******s bby the time they actually become doctors.

I attended Dental school for one year at the Medical University of South Carolina and took a leave of absence, never to return. I guess that carries about as much weight as staying at a Holiday Inn Express last night......

I have three friends that went to school in the Carribean--one actually in Grenada. Of the three, one's father was an extremely wealthy man and he bought his son a practice after he finished his residency and this guy does very well mainly due to family loyalty and the locale in which he practices. Also, he's a GP, so not as much chance of getting in trouble. When we took organic together, he failed and had to take it at another school to eventually pass. I have never observed him as a doctor, but my other doctor friends sort of isolate him socially.

The other two guys have had it worse--one works for a 'Doc in a Box' clinic and has trouble paying back his student loans. The other finished his residency and worked as an ER doc for a brief while and is now at chiropractic school

Personally, I wouldn't do it. It will cost you $150K and you will never earn the respect of your peers and may have trouble getting a job.

I know the saying about what you call the last guy in his class at medschool (Doctor), but I am just relaying to you my friend's experience. It is a huge investment in time to have to start over if you find out it doesn't pan out.

Finally, I know and have as clients a lot of doctors. I would not consider a guy who went to Mexico or one of the Islands to med school for a physician for myself or family. I am not saying that just because someone doens't have the best grades or MCAT that they can't become great physicians, but there is a lot of judgment and snobbery in the profession that they create for themselves.

My .02--please dont take offense.
