Not sure if this counts or not. But I just watched about $185,000.00 worth of Bell Helicopter and Cessna Citation specialty tools roll out of our hangers after the sale.

Tools are fun to buy, whether you really need them or not. I have more than a few of those.

Several people have mentioned theft. Here's a thought. A Boeing, that was a big problem. What we did was use an engraving tool to write our name and number on each piece. Back then it was probably SSN. Maybe phone no would be better today. Stolen tools are likely to be pawned and this might get them back.

My friend works for Sikorsky and he was saying that if a tool is lost they shut down the whole line until its found. Every tool has its spot and if its not their everything shuts down until its found. They don't want to risk a tool ending up in a critical area, causing the loss of an aircraft.

As little as possible. I have a lot of relatives who like to borrow my $hit, break or bang it up and then maybe consider returning it in a few years.

Yeah tell me about it. My uncle borrowed a $500 trolling rod from me, beat the living **** out of it, and now after a year its trashed and back in my garage. I'm going to have fun doing a wicked burn out in his new SL500...

I don't borrow tools, and I surely don't loan them. I even set up a "kid" tool box so my offspring can destroy the old no-name tools and stay away from my nice stuff. That way, they can find a screwdriver when they need one, but when they stick it in the grass as a marker and leave it in the rain for a week, it's no great loss. I'm trying to teach them to use tools properly too, and am trying to teach them to take care of the tools..ie, don't leave them out in the rain.

What I have woundered about is where are all the hand tools in the world going to? They keep making them and people keep buying them. Sure some get lost or broken but a medium quality hand tools with resonable care should out last the owner and be able to pass down to the next of kin. My guess is that unlike money tool loving folks have found some way to take there tools with them.

Way too much. Plus, I've got kids, so I have bought certain ones over and over . . .

. . I swear that one of these days I'm going to actually learn how to use some of them!

Keeping track of how much spent on tools is likely to be painful, much like keeping track of how much money you've spent at McDonalds or Dunkin' Donuts.

I think like most of us, I have a mixture of inherited tools, tools bought to replace the ones that broke, got lost, got loaned out and never seen again. Then there are the tools that were bought for one specific car or motorcycle. I think I presently have three tool boxes, divided between 'Car" "House" and "Relics"

I keep receipts for every tool I bought since moving out of my parent's house. Owning and maintaining vehicles, homes, yard equipment, etc. requires quite a few tools. I always buy tools as needed for a job and justify the tool because of the money I save doing it myself.

I also am very involved with glass, wood, and metal working. I even have a few antique tools that I got just because they look cool. I don't like to think about what I've spent, but there are no regrets.

After quitting smoking 5 years ago, thinking about that wasted money does give me regrets. (14 years x 1-2 packs a day)
