how much do you spend on tools?

I have been doing more and more wrenching on my fleet of worn out old cars and have been accumulating tools at an amazing rate. For those of you who do not turn wrenches professionally, how much money do you have tied up in your personal tools? Do you have brand preferences? Do you carry a rider on your homeowner's policy for the tools?

Yes, I do it professionally.

I owe Snap-On about $2,300, Burnt-Images $1,400, and spent $250 at Sears a few weeks ago.

Mostly, I have craftsman, but I got a MAC card from the truck when I was at Chevy and scored some "free" strap on stuff from school. All totaled about $3000. I need a new box pretty bad.

No clue ($$$)....

First set of socket wrenches when I was 15. First starter tools were leftovers from Dad. Accumulated more tools as needed for specific jobs.

Eventually, there was enough that my wife got me a Craftsman tool cabinet for Xmas...my hodge podge of tools stuff it to the gills!

Most tools are Craftsman and other odd sockets kits I got as gifts.

Same wife got me a huge air compressor as an anniversary gift one year! Assorted attachments for filling up soccer balls tires and pool toys, but have yet to invest in REAL air tools.

Got a couple of cheapo impact wrenches, and both lasted about a month (with light use).

I plan on buying at least one high-quality high-torque impact wrench someday...when I'm not spending thousands on MB repairs!

Ah man...a lot. On my garage-only tools, I'd guess in the $2-3K range?

Craftsman sockets/wrenches, storage cabinet, compressor, impact gun, paint kit, ramps, jacks, stands...and perhaps my most useful odd tool - a small rare earth magnet on a string for when I drop things I really need into engine crevices where needed things should never be dropped.

I'm just starting to accumulate a decent tool arsenal. I'm guessing it's about $600-700. Mostly Craftsman if I buy them since there's a Sears nearby.

For my boat it's pretty much the cheap "Sears" brand or even Wallyworld specials since the moisture/salt air wreak havoc even on quality tools and many of them can't swim. I'm guessing my boat toolbox, which is pretty well stocked with most things I'd need on the fly, doesn't have more than $70 invested in it. For any big project at the dock I bring my home stuff along.

I don't use tools professionally, but I work in a place where the tool trucks come through. The Snap-On guy is the only cool one of the name-brand trucks and he has helped himself to about $2000 of my money in the past 6 months...great tools though. I have all of my tools in portable boxes that I can throw in the trunk of a car since I do most of my repairs away from the house. The shop where I work did a survey of the tech's several months to see how much they had in their tools, the highest was one guy who has in excess of $150K in tools and boxes. I can see myself having $5000 in personal-use tools and whatever else I have tied-up in boxes and cabinets, but that's about it.

i would hate to guess.

but about twenty years ago someone got into my garage and stole all my tools.

i probably would have guessed about five hundred before i made a list, but the insurance company wanted a list with prices from sears, so i made one and went over to the store and priced out the replacemnet cost, and i seem to remember it was over fifteen hundred.

i have more than that now and they tend to be spread around, some in my garage, some in my basement at home and some at my building. this makes it tough to wipe me clean all at once.

when i buy new tool boxes i tend to take some gray spray paint and kindof camaflage it to attract the crows less.

(crows like shiney objects)....thieves are attracted by them too.

mostly craftsman. if i were a pro mechanic i probably wouldn't be able to resist snap ons. they are beautiful.

About $14000 inventoried and serial numbered.

I'm a heavy equipment mechanic. My tools are insured through work.

Some Snap on, lots of craftsman, Matco and a whole lot of custom tools.
