i scored a book: "motor racing year 1962-3
edited by alan brinton and john blundsen.
it covers each formula one race in 1962-3 with course plan and lots of candid shots of drivers and shots of folks working on ferraris, wreck shots etc. also some coverage of sports car races with some nice action shots of ferrari GTOs in action. paid $15 at a flea market. checked abe books and bookfinder. three copies for sale from 70 to 85 plus shipping and handling. i am about halfway through. it is great fun. copyright 1963. tom w

Sounds great! If you have a scanner would you consider posting a few interesting pictures for conversation? Any pictures of old Mercedes racers? It's a topic we don't often cover here, and I think it would be really interesting.

thanks for the interest but my scanning skills are very limited.
mercedes withdrew from racing after ninteen fifty five and the tragic lemans accident. this book is just the sixty two dash three season. kindof a yearbook. tom w

Shows what I know...
Was Formula 1 more interesting back then? I have a feeling if somebody wrote a book in 40 years about F1 today, it would be pretty dull. I really enjoy watching it, but with the overbearing regulations and lack of on-track competition I dunno if I would be compelled to read such a book. Peter |

the differences in cars was very easy to see. big changes were in the air. changing over to monocoque construction from tube frames. it was the first year with no front engined cars i think. races were often decided on which car had nothing too big break, and the winner often had a major component which failed but they finished the race anyway.
safety also was abismal with numerous drivers killed each year. tom w
