Quote of the Day

"Congressmen who willfully take actions during wartime that damage morale, and undermine the military are saboteurs and should be arrested, exiled or hanged."

~ President Abraham Lincoln~

Quite apropos, considering current events.

Theodore Roosevelt on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN

Are we "SLOW LEARNERS" or what?

Theodore Roosevelt on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN

"In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

That is a beautiful quote, Carleton. Very apropos considering we are being overrun here in So. Cal. by Mexicans crossing the border illegally.

There are several ways to look at that. What has been the effect on morale of this whole damned OIF thing? What is the proper response to a president who let ambition get the better of him, leading the country into a potentially, if not actually ruinous war?

And bear in mind, Congress is reflecting the will of the people, as has been clearly shown in many polls, particularly the poll that took place last November.

lincoln was dealing with a civil war. the enemy was right here in our country. there were southern sympathizers woven all through the north. a person could be a congressman and have southern sympathies. people like this would be in a position to help the enemy very much.

this is a totally different situation to our present situation in iraq. there are no iraqis in our congress.

there are simply folks who have different opinions on how to end the iraq conflict. nobody is setting out to kill our troops or ruin our country....although both of those things could be easily attributed to our president by folks who represent differing viewpoints.

in the civil war the south learned a huge amount of intelligence simply by reading the northern newspapers.

it was a very strange and vicious war.

The ONLY THING Congress is reflecting on is how to get a Dem in the White House. If Bush could, somehow, be blamed for the tornadoes in Kansas this weekend, they'd be bringing it to the House and Senate floors this coming Monday morning.

As far as polls go - If those things had any truth in them at all (Which way is the wind blowing right now, and am I in the correct room to get the results I need?) we'd be kissing a Dem's @55 in the WH right now.

But we aren't.

Polls had the Dems winning everything in '04. Didn't work worth 5hit.

I'd be happy if all pencils, radios, televisions, newspapers and telephones disappeared 60 days before an election. Just stick the candidate on a train, plane or automobile, get his @55 out to the people, then stick his @55 on a soapbox in the middle of town and let HIM (non-gender descriptor) tell us in his own words what the hell he's about.

I don't need someone else's interpretation of what THEY THINK he said. If he's too dumb to say it himself CLEARLY, then that's his loss.

Our problem is we let these goofballs (pols) off the hook by letting someone else tell us what they're about. Then the polititian can use the "denyable plasibility" (sp?) excuse to say "I didn't say/mean what was said..." B.S..

Using polls as an excuse to perform an action or to prove a point, IMHO, is a sign of an arguement that's been lost.

Don't get too cocky, that poll from last November told the Republicans they weren't do their jobs, in essence, they weren't "Republican enough". It was not an embrace of the Democrats. They were just the default (and only) alternative. Poll after poll show the country does not trust democrats with their security.

Congress does NOT reflect the will of the people, when was the last time congress did anything that the first consideration was not "how does congress benefit?"

Polls are not reliable, depending on how they are worded they can be one sided.. so dont use polls anymore in your arguements its completly useless to base any information on polls

"Several ways to look at it"?????.....

Looks like a pretty straightforward and no-nonsense statement to me. I don't think he had your "creative interpretation" of it in mind when he said it.

And Congress reflects NOTHING nowadays, except their own desire to get re-elected.

Shall we discuss TERM LIMITS for Congress once again????....

At least the office of President has term limits, so that the damage that can be caused by any one of them is minimized....

Mike
