Can somebody tell me why the reloads that I have used, groady up my barrel so bad? (I inherited the reloads)

Must know what they are...bullet type, weight, propellant type, fps, caliber, revolver or semi-auto and pistol type.

There are optimum amounts of propellant for various speeds. For example, if they're using an insufficient amount of a slower burining propellant in order to reduce the muzzle velocity, you'll have a lot of smoke and crud generated. Years ago, we loaded some sub 900fps .357s using, I think, Blue Dot. Jeez! It was like shooting blackpowder...smoke everywhere!

Also, it is combustion byproducts or lead? My flattop leads the bore so bad that after shooting 100 or so rounds of hard cast, I swear you can run the Lewis through it and pull out enough lead to make 2-3 more bullets. I generally shoot JHPs because really I hate deleading that pistol.

Yea, straight lead fouls the barrel. But shooting inside gives you no choice.

I shoot "remanufactured" ammo inside since I can't buy new CNL cartridge in 40SW.

As for casting my own bullets? I'll leave the lead smelting to others. I value my nerve cells.

Do you shoot with a full on respirator (2 can)....or just a dust mask???..

Cant be breathin...Lead dust particulate produced by the pistol discharge...really bad for the nerve cells.....Man you are to funny for words.

Probably not. You can shoot rounds out of one gun fine and in another gun, it might not cause the action to cycle at all. All difficult to say. I don't shoot reloads that I didn't reload. Too much risk.

I shoot lead too. Right out of my wife's G23 and out of my G21. I shoot indoors so I have to use lead. However, what I do is shoot a few jacketed bullets outsides to clean the barrel out. Also, I shoot Laser-Cast bullets. They are not straight lead. Some sort of lead alloy which is harder and less likely to foul up the grooves.

Well, I would do it in the summer so I could do it outside. Further to that, unless you are smelting tons of lead, the little you use will probably not harm you as much as a lungful or two of exhaust.

I shoot with no respirator. However, the indoor range has some very good ventilation. Three huge fans pull air away from the firing line, and a nice big duct behind me supplies fresh air. You can feel a lot of wind on your back.

You're right, of course, that shooting any lead bullets can lead to exposure to lead. This goes for jacketed bullets too, since the jacket rarely extends all the way around the back of the bullet.

Clip on wheel weights have different alloys mixed with the lead...Makes pretty hard boolits...I quench mine buy dropping them in cold water...end result, a hard cast bullet. I then tumble lube them...that coats the whole bullet..just like 22lr lead bullets are entirely coated with lube...no leading problems for me..Oh yeah...the boolits in the pic have the lube wiped off to make them look pretty for the pic....

Can lead be tempered and have it show a significant difference?

A Ruger 9mm. Most of the reloads do not appear to be brass, but some other metal.

A dull aluminum casing means it is a one shot only casing.
