Good tow vehicle
If this can happen, then I don't see why a 300TD can't pull a car.

*** Tranny or Engine ***
All that smoke was either:
Transmission: Clutch plate (manual) burning up... Engine: Head gasket gone - engine overheating just before seizing... I'm putting my money on the tranny failure...if numbnutz couldn't figure out that the mobile-home was oversized for the car...what makes him a driving guru that he'd be able to figure out how to stop the car in a rear-ward slide into oblivion? If the engine had seized, at least the POS would (maybe) have stayed where it died... Then again, with the amount of moisture on the road, who knows? His tires were, probably, bald.

If a car is geared right, you can tow anything with 20HP - just not very fast. Most people don't turn off overdrive and lug the engine and also the tranny heats up pretty good too.
