Rap music responsible for violence says NOLA mayor

Five dead in Memorial weekend shootings in N.O.
07:10 AM CDT on Monday, May 28, 2007
WWLTV.com

Five people were killed in New Orleans in a blood Memorial Day weekend.

Late Sunday night two men were killed in separate incidents. In the first, a 24-year-old man was found lying in the street in the 1200 block of Clouet. Police said he had been shot to death.

Across the Industrial Canal, police responded to a man shot and killed during an apparent botched drug deal.

Investigators said two men came to the 6400 block of North Villere in the Ninth Ward to buy crack when an unidentified man approached the car and shot one of the men following an argument. The car drove off and the driver called for help. The victim was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The two killings followed three others over the weekend.

A 19-year-old was shot to death Friday afternoon at 2:30 in the 2400 block of South Miro Street. On Saturday a 22-year-old man was shot to death in the 7900 block of Earhart and on Sunday afternoon an 18-year-old man was shot to death on North Dupre.

Police have yet to publicly identify any of the victims, pending family notification.

The string of crimes came on a weekend where victims of crime were remembered at a special mass at St. Louis Cathedral.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said the city is still struggling to get a handle on violent crime and he blamed the modern culture for part of the problem.

“Way too many of our young people turn to violence and have this hopelessness and have this ‘bling-bling’ mentality which they see on the rap videos.”

Hmm

I wonder if the community has anything to do with it? Kanye said George Bush hates black people, I am curious as to what the ethnic makeup of these murderers and their victims were...

Most of the murders are over turf issues. The organized crime networks before the storm in many cases had no place to go after the storm. Additionally, outside gangs, especially hispanic, saw an opportunity make a move on the city. So the city is the battleground for a multi-sided gang war in which alliances rise and fall daily. The police force was absent during Katrina and is not much better organized now. So they concentrate on the tourist areas, CBD, etc. This leaves some areas poorly patrolled by a force that has low cohesion.

You don't just hire folks and put a badge on them and expect miracles. The officers have to learn to trust and depend on each other. That was swept away by Katrina through the monumental ineptitude of the then police chief. He was so bad that Nagin fired him during the recovery. Now I'm no great fan of Nagin's, but I have not heard him accused of being a crook. He was a successful businessman before running for office and when he came in he swept a bunch of insider crap out of the door. The new police chief that Nagin hired seems competent, so in the long term I believe they'll get the city under better control.

So if you have a hankering to make money off of drugs and don't mind a risk, NOLA is the land of opportunity. Better be well-armed because this town ain't big enough for all the gangs. I'm betting it will get worse in the short term, at least until NOPD can fully reconstitute. The tourist areas are safe. It's yourass if you start messing around in the city if you don't know it. Like many big cities, huh?

It was one of the most corrupt and crime-ridden cities in our nation BEFORE the hurricane, why should it be any different now?....

Nagin is useless, his police department was useless, and is even more so now.

But to be fair, things like this happen in EVERY city, every day, thanks to our government's wonderful "war on drugs" effort.

Hey, I have an idea!

Let's find something that people really really really want, something that directly harms no one other than the user himself.

Let's then make that substance illegal, and declare a "war" on it, and then we'll all stand around with a dumb look on our faces, pretending to wonder why there's a violent, worldwide black market that sprang up to supply the demand!!!...

Oh, yeah... and then we'll blame it all on "hip-hop"!!! Brilliant!!!!

Hmmm... Who'd a' thunk it?....

Sounds like you've been possessed by dark, demoniacal forces using backward-masked rock music. I see it all the time. For $10.95 I'll send you my Bronze Shield: A protective prayer that you must recite and I'll add your name to my prayer list. Or upgrade to the "Silver Spear" and for only $25.99 I'll send the Bronze Shield PLUS! My DVD which includes a generic exorcism. But for better results, for $69.99 I'll send you my "Golden Arrow" DVD. This special item will not only provide you with an exorcism using YOUR NAME, it will also include 7 of my best sermon's including at least one of these favorites: How Carnal Lust is Decaying your Soul, Satan is hiding in every woman's pants. Or my personal favorite: How I drove Satan from my life and got a brand new Cadillac.

I thought rap came from violence.

I lived in New Orleans for a year. Great eats, great parties and a gunshot victim in the French quarter every 15 minutes on the dot.

I worked on the Poland street wharf and had to drive through some rough areas to get to work.

No, the mayor clearly stated it's all that bling bling rap music. Has nothing to do with people taking responsibility for their own actions....The mayor plans on using "fire ant juice" to take care of the violence in bling blingville...

.
In the Quarter Bad information. Although the quarter is not absolute of crime the violence is not there. Look at the article - Villere, 9th Ward, Miro Street, Earhart - real fine areas but not the Quarter.

Kinda like alcohol? Harms none but the user? Wrong. Do you want truck drivers stoned? How about school bus drivers? Hey its legal right?

There will be a black market for any item in short supply in any particular area. Its a fact of life, not necessarily tied to the legality of the product.
