Airline Etiquette / Seat management

When sitting in coach, and first class for that matter, there is always the question of: "How far should you recline your seat?"
1) All the way back
2) All the way back, only if no one is behind you.
3) Part of the way back
4) Seats should not recline

Having flown quite a bit I will add my thoughts and experiences.

In first class or business class there is usually enough room for anyone to recline all they would like without encroaching or annoying the person behind you.

In coach it is another story. I would never recline fully unless the seat behind is unoccupied, or it is a LONNG trip where everyone is reclining in an attempt to get some sleep.

I can't tell you how many times someone in front has pushed their seat back to my knees and kept pushing until they hurt me.

Another problem is needing to use a laptop if the seat ahead is reclined fully. A laptop screen can't be seen when only opened 80 degrees...

As far as having seats that do not recline? If they would change the 'full upright' position to not be quite so straight up I could live with it, but as it is, the seat backs push me so far forward that my body is off center and it takes constant effort to sit upright without falling forward. I can't wait to be airborne so that I can recline a little to relieve my back. I have occasionally been seated in a non-reclining exit row and have vowed to never do that again...

AT 6'4", I can certainly commiserate with that.

I have a little game that I play with the person in the forward seat. When that seat starts to move back.........my knee is firmly and solidly jammed into the seat back. So, it's a matter of strength. Do they have the strength required to compress the material in the seat to get the seat to move further aft? Women can never do it. The "average" man (180 lb.) is borderline. He might get a bit of recline.......but not much. Anyone over 200 lb. can usually overcome the knee resistance with their added weight on the seatback.

Even if they prevail, there is now a solid connection between my foot and their skull. So, any motion of my foot is directly transmitted through my knee .........through the seat back.........and up into their brain. Usually, my right foot starts to develop a tapping motion that will continue for the remainder of the trip, if necessary. It's funny to watch their head bob in rhythm...........

Usually, the seat moves forward a bit............but........sometimes not...........and my knee is thoroughly abused after one hour until I must give up the fight............

Touché Brian.
(And yes, I do.)

On a more serious note (and not to hijack). What have a bigger issue with is the guy next to you that elbow hogs well beyond the armrest. And just as bad - has to sit there with his legs spread as to rub knees with you. I hate having some dudes leg rubbing against mine. I’d rather be able to perform dental work on the guy in front of me than that.

The armrest issue is always a problem. I really suffer if I must keep my elbow inside the plane that extends upwards from the center of the armrest. I pray for short women who can't reach the armrest comfortably.

In reality, the only way to keep your arm inside the plane is to jamb the point between the two bones right into the inside corner of the armrest. It's not too pleasurable after one hour. Any other position will cause your elbow to cross the imaginary barrier.

I haven't had any issue with the knee thing..........most will recoil at the slightest contact.........

I hate the middle seat. I have to have an aisle seat on a large plane. The small ones I can live with a window seat. The middle just sucks .

Knee Defender

The worst seat mate is usually a guy that has to sit with his legs spread . . . and has that twitchy leg that is constantly bouncing up and down.

They're fabulous.

You get the benefit of two elbows........not just one.

You can't look out the window and you can't lean over into the aisle.

You also get the possiblity of double gas..........not just the chance of single gas.

I thought everybody loves 'em...........

Based on this list alone....I think center seats should be 50% off the going rate.
