I'm thinking about buying a Toureg

The 08 Touregs are out and I was at the dealers. I am interested in something with awd, and the 07 Toureg is being pushed hard. Deeply discounted, and is my color combo. It is a V6 model. Anyone care to opine on it?

One of my favorite looking cars. BUT, out of the three people I know that have had them, none kept them more than a year. I will try to find out why and report back.

The Touareg is damn heavy for its size, nearly as heavy as a Tahoe or Expedition. Try before you buy, especially if you live in hilly terrain, carry a lot of passengers and cargo, or plan to tow. I don't think that they have a good rep in the reliability department.

Consumer Reports predicts reliability of a Touareg as 119% worse than the average vehicle. Makes a Land Rover look like a Lexus.

If reliability is really the issue, then maybe I'll pass. Though I like the handling, and even the power of the thing. Seemed a good deal if I could get it for $30-35k. Sticker is $41k.

But, a good deal alone isn't reason enough to buy.

Different vehicle with less panache, but it might be worth a look and should be in your budget: Honda Pilot.

Are they mechanically unreliable or electronically unreliable as the VW's typically are?

Two of the three guys I knew that had them got Toyo Sequoias. If you can go $35 you can probably pick up a Sequoia for that.

Any idea how they like the Sequoia? A friend of mine is back to the idea of ditching his old Tahoe.

I probably know ten people that have them and LOVE them. It is as big as a tahoe and has a lexus interior. I am not in the market and won't be for two years or so but I will either get a Sequoia or the Infinity version of the Armada when I buy again.

As a VW owner I can tell you -- if having a vehicle that is reliable is important to you -- you DO NOT want a new VW.

Simple. They are lots of fun to drive, and to work on -- but if you're not an enthusiast -- stay away.

The '06 Rabbit we bought our daughter has been bullet-proof.

I really like the car.

I think that VW is turning the corner.

Isn't the Toureg a "poor" man's Cayenne?

I disagree (see my comments about the '06 Rabbit).

That is refreshing to hear. We'd love to have a Passat TDI someday.

A friend's 05' TDI Passat has funny A/C controls. Press the A/C button and nothing happens. 6-10 minutes later the A/C kicks in.

Let someone else take the depreciation hit on of these babies:

A loaded 2006 V8 with 18k miles for $33K at my nearest BMW dealership used lot.

Take a look at the BMW X5. X5's are pretty nice, they are growing on me.
