3S remake = flop
X5.
They need unknowns who are really talented and this would become their big break. I t would take 3 guys together to do something amazing, with a series of movies supported by characters from something like a repertory company. That's what Hal Roach Studios had when they made the 3 S and the "Our Gang Comedy" and the "Dead End Kids" and the "Bowery Boys." That's what the Marx Brothers did too. Cuz it works. Wait for it on basic cable. Don't go see the movie.

Its supposed to come out in 2010. Hopefully someone will stop it!! When will Hollywood realize that a classic is a classic for a reason not to be buchered and repackaged! Next it will be gone with the wind with Julia Roberts and George Clooney.....then Casablanca with Colin Farel....uggggggg

Agreed! I'm surprised that they didn't think an all female, 3 Stoogettes version wasn't better.
Remakes are a bad idea in general, but I've been trying to come up with with a theorhetically perfect modern Larry, Moe, Curly or Shemp without much success. Any thoughts? The bar has already been set on the ground, it could only get better. A 10 year younger Gene Wilder? Pesci with a bowl cut? Drew Carey with a shaved head?

The beauty of the originals was the simple yet clever thinking of the comedy...as in this example

Yeah but now they can "reimagine" the whole concept.....now Jim Carey will invent some sort of super high tech flying car and with the other stooges in tow save the universe!!!! Man the CR@P that comes out of Hollywood....ohhh and if you want to see the modern king of crap movies look no further than Uwel Boll...I think thats how his name is spelled.

Wasn't there a made-for-TV Three Stooges movie awhile back?

People were baffled by the director of Chaplin to cast Morton Downey Jr., IIRC that worked out well.

Yeah, but it was a movie ABOUT the Stooges not a Three Stooges movie. Hollywood has run out of ideas. Next thing there will be a "Petticoat Junction" movie! Nothing good can come from this. Of course it will be a big hit and they will make a bunch of sequels, like "Ocean's Thirteen" I cannot believe that Sean Penn who thinks he is a serious actor, would condescend to be in a slapstick comedy. Oh, no, I get it! This movie will be a dark drama about the injustice of life in Greenland...

There was an interesting bopic out a few years back that was a made for TV movie about the Stooges. The basic story line: The film picks up in 1958 when the Stooges are in retirement and they are bought out of retirement by a 'back east' TV station to do a live show to promote the stations kiddie show run of Stooge's films.
As they travel by train (a three day trip) from LA to Boston they think back over their lives, so the film is basically a long series of flashbacks. However, if you are true Stooge fan, or if you like Hollywood history, this is a film worth seeing. The only error I could pick out was that it showed Moe as being sort of down and out in 1958 and he was picking up a dollar here and there running errens on the Columbia lot. He was also washing the movie stars cars. In fact Moe did do this but only to stay busy since he had invested his film earnings in LA real estate in the 1930's and by 1958 was a multi-millionare with a home in Beverly Hills. He hung out at the lot because in that business only other film people can really relate to you. Moe was known in show-biz circles as a very generious man that would not only help out other down on their luck comics but would also throw open his house to fans that wrote to him. Each new visitor would be shown a glass case, like the ones in churches that large Bibles are kept in, that contained an encyclopedia open to the page on 'comedy', and to illustrate what a comic was there was a picture of The Three Stooges. The film does not show Larry Fine dying broke, but it does show that he loved to live in hotels and order room service. As Larry Fine said during one of his last interviews, "I'm glad I spent it then because I sure can't spend it now!" I think it is interesting that this new film has been in development since 2001 or before. The only thing that is moving it forward is the intrest of one or more stars willing to work cheap. The big deal in Hollywood these days is the 'franchise' so they are likely hoping to make it big with this film and then do a few more. As the raido producer said to Edger Bergan's agent when Bergan wanted to do a radio show, "A ventrequilist on the radio? Well, he'd better be good." |
