Honda Civic tops teen driver list

http://www.cnn.com/2007/AUTOS/06/07/teen_cars/index.html

Honda Civics, both new and used, are the most popular cars among teenage drivers, according to a recent survey.

The most popular new car among teens is the Civic, and the most popular used car is a seven-year-old Civic.

Sports cars don't appear among the top ten in either list, presumably because of the higher insurance costs and higher risks presented by the aggressive driving performance-oriented cars invite, according to QPC.

BORING!

In my day, sonny, we all wanted to drive what everyone else didn't have...

WHAT'S WITH THESE YOUNG FOLKS?

I'm expecting to offer my son... 5 years hence... my SLC.

You think he's going to say... "Dad, I really want a Honda."

Definetly not local... There's a STRONG U.S. car backing up here.

In the parking lot at school theres a billion 91-96 ford escorts and rangers, Pontiac grand ams, Chevy cavilears and barrettas, and the infamious Neon's... Big three is very popluar

But yeah, whatever's cheap, easy to get parts for/fix, runs, and isnt dead from rust is the norm, spair for the occasional knumbskull with a brand new (or less then 2 years old) car/truck...

I swear if my car was any more popluar, I'd loose the SOB in the parking lot.

Gas and insurance is too expensive for big trucks, SUV's, and sports cars... Unless mommy buys gas, or u sell drugs, it's not gonna happen

Reason: their easy to rice out and make look like a crappy sports car... why get a sports car when you can get a civic and rice it for way cheaper?

Civics, VW Jetta's, BMW 3's, and Camry/Accords are super popular in the college parking lots.

I'd have to say the Jetta is giving it a run for its money, but it seems the Civic is king.

No one in my generation likes American cars, well unless you are talking sports cars and Vettes. I think the big three are in worse trouble then they realize, the only American cars in the college parking lot are hand me downs.

My first car was a Honda Civic AWD wagon. Unlike kids today, I waited until after college to buy a car. No $$ help. I could have cared less what other younger people thought. Now pat me on the back.

Unless you're made of money, you won't be giving your child an SLC............

I won't even comment on the dangers such a vehicle presents to a teenager.

The Honda civic is a perfect first choice of vehicle for a young driver.

Insurance probably would be wicked for a 16 year old on an SLC. I bet $3k-$4k per year. I know when I was 17 for pretty basic coverage they wanted to charge me $3k a year for a 560SEC.

I don't think SLC would be that bad would it? It's not a sports car and it isn't that fast.

I guess a cheap FWD econo-box will always be cheaper to insure though. I would much rather have a Mazda 3 with a stick than a Civic though. A lot more fun to drive.

Unless you're a DIY'er a ~30 year old Mercedes won't be easy on the wallet. To each his own...

I would have loved to have a newer civic in high school, and in all honesty when i looked to "upgrade" from my SD they were also on my list. I basically have an upper end civic now with my integra. I will say that a civic with an automatic tranny is ungodly slow(wait!? coming from a guy who used to own an SD??? YES!), at least my SD had a reason to be slow. They are solid, reliable, relatively safe, cheap to insure, and good on gas, what more does a teenager need?? Doesn't suprise me one bit...

I wonder if the big three have considered as the target generation getting older, will have more spending collateral but will probably shun their products over the Japanese and European counterparts...

My first car in high school was a Pontiac T/A and my last car I purchased in US was the Accord V6.

I first looked into 60's VW Beetles and Buses before I chose the W123.

Yep, my teen ride was a '71 VW bus. The W123 is much more stylish though.

My thought exactly. It weighs a ton... actually 2 tons, and takes forever to get up to speed. It is built like a brick with heavy doors and enormous frontal area.

Whoever came up with "sports licht" or "sports light" had a funny sense of humor.

I'm not comfortable with a lightweight car for a young person.... my $.02.

What I really want to know is whether this will be a babe magnet?

Gas mileage sucks, but in 5 years, I figure we'll have some sort of thermo-nuclear device to go under the hood and we'll be done with petro.
