6 people die trying to save a life not worth saving
You are born with a set of lungs. If you smoke and ruin them, that's your problem. We all know the dangers. The other day six people died in a plane crash trying to save a man who smoked and developed "chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder." Tell me life is fair.

While I agree with the tragedy of the loss of life of the transplant team, I don't agree that they lost their lives for a man who is "not worth saving".
The judgment is not theirs to make and I'm sure they would never put a value on one life over the next. This patient was deemed most in need and most compatible (presumably) and the dedication of the team involved is laudatory without comment on the receipient's lifestyle. Extraordinary measures to save someone's life, someone who abused their life, are a tough one for me, what with all sorts of relatively healthy people, children especially, whose health suffers for lack of far less complicated interventions.
How much does a transplant like that cost and who pays for it? And to give the guy a couple of years more life, often of medium quality? OTOH, I've read of people who had a congenital condition be given a new lease on life, with many years of healthy productivity, because of a transplant.

How about the smoker who gets throat cancer, gets a tracheotomy and continues to smoke?

Medicare or is it Medicaid pays for gastric bypass. Should we pay for the person's lack of discipline? What about somebody who gets diabetes? What about heart diseases?
OTOH, if you limit all free transplants and medical procedures to only those who have shown no abuse to their bodies, we would solve the medical problems we have. Those who do not qualify will probably die off quickly. Those who do (very few) will have more than enough resources.

Medical resources are finite and if you don't think so, check out the large number of people who file bankruptcy because of medical bills.

You know what? Upon further thought, I never met this guy. I'd probably think different if I knew him as well as I knew my neighbor.
All behavior has some risk. We perform stunts but we make sure those risks are minimized with safety equipment. The risks of smoking cannot be minimized.

Those folks died while doing what they chose to do. They knew their job had risks, but did it anyway.
Kudos to them and all who risk their lives to improve the life of others.

Based on what most people realize is left of folks after any plane "landing" where NO ONE WALKS AWAY ... you're lucky if you're able to find one body that's 100% intact ... 'Nuff said on that subject... Anyone hungry for a PB&J?
