Best Neighborhood Bars...

Let's us know of the best neighborhood bars where you live.

In DC there is a great cigar bar called "Shelly's Back Door" on 19th. Great atmosphere, good eats, greaaat flat screens and of course smoking is encouraged.

We've got a place called The Bunker which is a cool place my wife and I like to sneak out to the 2 or 3 times a year we can escape for a drink or three.:( The have comedy nights and live bands (classic rock mostly, some blues, southern rock tributes) most of the days of the week over the summer. Nice covered outdoor seating area with some pool tables.

The neighborhood watering hole is Ye Olde Towne Bar that's the volunteer firefighter hang out. I make it in there a few times a year, usually after a Chamber of Commerce meeting or something, and no matter what day or time I'm in there it's the same group sitting at the bar. They're not necessarily old and destitute, just always at the bar. Lots of people that were in the same cliques in H.S. a decade+ ago. Maybe they each breakfast, lunch and dinner there and go in for an after dinner drink?

Spent my early years in Chicago and Cleveland; had a favorite spot in each. although identifying a favorite is not easy among so many. However, after living the last 20+ years in Fairfax, VA, I am sure the term 'neighborhood bar' has no similar meaning. But I am eager to be proven wrong.

Mark

Hmm

The "Lil Bear" lounge in Tiverton, RI is a great hangout. Cheap beer and drinks, good atmosphere, good people.

I like clubing in New Haven, outside of NY it has the best clubs one can go to. The "Playwrite" is good, as is Bar, among others. In Milford the scene is tame, we have one club. Its ok though, if you don't really feel like going out and just want to hang.

The Blue Cube is really cool, to thats in Orange.

Suburban Maryland has no neighborhood bars. They are mostly chain franchises filled with corporate lunch crowds. A few of the little local places I've seen are so grimy and nasty, I wouldn't send a mangy dog in there. Luckily I'm not a regular pub crawler so it makes no difference to me.

"Sadie's" on high street, Waltham, MA. The best steak-tip's in the world. One side is a bar, and the other is the eating area. Small, and relatively cheap; I can feed two adults, two kids, and some beer for about $60.00 including tip.

The Odgen Street Cafe about 8 blocks from my house has great food. Club 404 a few blocks away has a good reputation but the food is terrible.

I have never been into the club or bar scene, even in college.

Always felt they were full of depressing people, either staring wide-eyed into their drinks, or pretending to be Walter Mitty.

What I did enjoy is during my time spent living and working in Japan is a traditional kind of Japanese restaurant called izakaya, which serves food to go along with alcohol that they keep serving you in copious amounts: beer, whisky, and sake.

BOSOMS AND BOOZE ARE A COSTLY MIX

CANBERRA -- An Australian barmaid has been fined for crushing beer cans between her bare breasts while an off-duty colleague has been fined for hanging spoons from her friend's nipples, police said yesterday.

Luana De Faveri, 31, was fined $1,000 in the Mandurah Magistrates Court on Wednesday after pleading guilty to two breaches of Licence Conditions under the Liquor Control Act.

Police said in June this year, De Faveri twice exposed her breasts to patrons in the Premier Hotel in Pinjarra, 87km south of Perth.

"She was alleged to have also crushed beer cans between her breasts during one of the offences," police said.

Another bar worker, Tracey Amanda Leslie, 43, was fined $500 after pleading guilty to assisting the commission of a breach of the act by helping hang spoons from De Faveri's nipples.

The pub manager, Roy Williams, 43, was fined $1,000 after pleading guilty to a breach of the act by failing to stop the women's behaviour.

Superintendent David Parkinson of the Peel Police District said: "It sends a clear message to all licensees in Peel that we will not tolerate this type of behaviour in our licensed premises."
