I did not know this.
Just replaced 4 light bulbs to fluorescent which are over my garage and front door. These bulbs do not work with electronic timers.Went to Home Depot to find a mech. timer that will fit into the switch box,but no luck.Any ideas?

Compact florescent lamps don't work with dimmers either, which I believe is stated on the package.
Most garage door operators also use electronic controls for the bulbs, which means that you can't use them there. Either wire in a separate mechanical timer or stick with incandescent lamps. |

*** Or... ***
Make an "interface" box...
Have the timer trip a relay that puts the full current of AC to the lamps and bypasses the timer's circuitry and/or dimmer.

This is because they have ballasts I'm guessing?

They don't work with timers? I never heard that one. Did you try? They need a constant 120V so that is why they don't work with dimmers that produce a "chopped" voltage. (There are some flourescents made to run off of dimmers). They also cannot work off of light sensors that have a gradual turn on/off. I happen to have light sensor that produces a "solid cut on/off" with no intermediate condition so it works fine with the flourescents and I have had one in there for 5 years.
