Mensa rollcall
I work with a fella that's a member of Mensa. Had no idea he was that brainy until he mentioned belonging one day. I still can't see it. He's not dumb by any means, but just didn't come across as particularly brilliant.
Any of ya hangin' here? What's the criteria? Heck, I may even qualify!

Membership in Mensa is open to persons who have attained a score within the upper two percent of the general population on an approved intelligence test that has been properly administered and supervised. There is no other qualification or disqualification for membership eligibility. http://www.mensa.org/index0.php?page=10 My impression is that this qroup consisted of a bunch of bright albeit VERY socially awkward kids whose parents wanted them to go to the meeetings since they felt and acted "different" from the general teen populace. I guess the parents wanted them to know that there were other people around like them. There was a sort of oneupsmanship going on - who could talk the smartest. From an appearance viewpoint, it sort of looked like the bar scene in the first Star Wars movie, except without the intoxicating drinks or music. As I'm writing this, and although I've never been to a GTG, I am thinking that half of the membership of this forum might qualify.... At least if the intelligence test qualification part was removed. |

I've known a number of really brilliant people that were also very socially awkward. Often they seemed to be able to comprehend extremely abstract, complicated concepts with east while displaying a lack of what I would call common sense or street smarts.
Everybody has a gift for something. We're all different, though and ought not to think more highly of ourselves than others just because we happen to be gifted in one particular area. I guess it's just human nature, though.

I don't know what my IQ is. I am socially awkward though......maybe it is because I am too smart!

My wife had two job interviews where she had to take those tests. They never told her what she scored, but extended a job offer the very next day. According to them, it wasn't an IQ test.

For some jobs, they give an IQ test and throw out too high and too low scores.

You can count IQ tests and personality inventories at almost any decent company these days, our company has found them to be right on target for assessing aptitude and personality.

That's the closest I'll get. I think you've got to be in the 98th percentile and higher for membership.

I professor I know actually helps WRITE the IQ tests. I only had one seminar from him. I was honestly too freaked out to take a class since I didn't think I could contribute anything to a class with the prof sporting a ~180 IQ
