Who knew a 2-inch toy army man could cause such a stir?

A fifth-grade promotion ceremony in Rancho Palos Verdes turned into a free-speech battleground Thursday, when students were asked to remove weapons from toys that had been placed on mortarboard caps because of the school's zero-tolerance policy for weapons on campus.

Each year, students decorate wide caps with princesses, football goal posts, zebras, guitars and other items to express their personalities and career goals. Cornerstone at Pedregal School is the only Palos Verdes Peninsula public school to practice the tradition.

On Thursday, before the ceremony, one boy was told he couldn't participate unless he agreed to clip off the tips of the plastic guns carried by the minuscule GIs on his cap. Ten others complied with the order before the event.

I really hate public schools, a lot of the people that set policy for them are morons.

Back in the day, we used to laugh as these ideas ideas were discussed in my Government Classes; they were so silly on the surface. Now those "silly girls" are running ( ruining) the country with the same ideas. Did no one ever explain that these ideas were stupid?

Most of them? Anything they want -- they are over-paid and can get away with nearly anything -- guaranteed employment, a fat pension and benefits and they work 2/3 of the year, if that.

Hey I totally agree with the policy! There have been too many campus incidents by accidental discharge of toy soldier weapons!

Visit an ER on any given day and witness the damage several rounds of an .000004 caliber weapon can inflict on a school administrator! :rocketwho

Please, this is a school setting, try to get the math correct. A .45 caliber round would be in the neighborhood of .0140625" and the .223 works out to .00696875". These figures are substantially different than the one you posted. Please try to respect the intelligence of academia. That is all.

No apology needed for me, my main concern was for those school officials who obviously are better educated (and hence more intelligent) than I. For my sake, the very idea of banning toy soldiers makes no sense. But I am but a humble mechanic, and not very knowledgeable in the ways of such things. Perhaps I should just trust in these officials to make decisions for me...
