Mosquito Man

When I was a kid there used to be a "mosquito truck" drive thru the neighborhood fogging the streets with DDT.
Kids reacted the same as when the "Ice Cream Man" drove thru. We all got on our bicycles and rode in the fog, every now and then crashing into each other or the back or the truck. Its a wonder we survived...

A friend of mine I grew up with has been looking for a picture of one of these old DDT sprayer outfitted jeeps. No such luck.

I was just wondering if anyone here had any leads or pics I could pass on...

thanks for the memory----growing up in Florida I used to lie awake at night and listen for the DC6 airplanes that used to fly overhead and spray the area when it got really bad. I don't remember the trucks coming around, just de plane, de plane...

I wish we had those trucks now. I have one of those mosquito killing contraptions with the propane tank and it barely makes a dent in the problem.

I thought they spayed Malathion, not DDT...

They have a few trucks like that in my area. But new modern versions. All F250 powerstrokes with a big tank and sprayer fitted to it. I havent a clue to what they spray

When Dad lived in Jamaica Beach (less that 10 years ago), they'd fly over with some Beech or Piper twin and spray...smelled like Durasban to me.

Permethrin works well for skeeters and is still readily available at most hardware stores and garden centers.

When I was a kid (mid-late '60s) they sprayed with a contraption that looked like a machine gun turret mounted on a trailer behind a pickup. It had a fan that atomized and boosted the chemical far up into the trees. There was a guy manning the turret and swiveling it all around. The trees would toss around like in a high wind and the stuff went everywhere. Don't know what it was but my kids are normal, physically anyway.
