leaky toilet
 

We have a leaky toilet at home. Leaks from the tank to the bowl. I replaced the flapper and I think it's tight. Looks to me that it's leaking from the base of inlet valve/overflow tube thingy that rises from the bottom of the tank. The gasket/o-ring where the tube meets the bottom of the tank doesn't look too good. Would that leak into the bowl in a one-piece toilet?

Good question - I have the exact same problem and will be watching this thread. Flapper is new(ish), valve was replaced, and still can't get the thing to stop leaking. I swear it's probably dumping a few gallons a day. I never thought of checking out that riser tube...

One piece toilet? As in tank and bowl are a single unit?

That's what I would suspect. Water level too hi, flapper or the tube gasket.

Just finished replacing a toilet here. Yum, cleaning off the wax gasket... Fun. New toilet ends up about a half an inch deeper (front to back) than the old one which was already against the wall. I fudged a little forward and made it fit without having to move the floor flange. Whew.

The best thing to do IMO is to buy a rebuild kit and replace everything, they are less than $10.00 if you shop around.

two possibilities in my mind:
1. gasket you noted....the seal the flapper seats on. these sometimes are tough to get to seal properly too.

2. the standpipe will accept water if the float is adjusted too high and it fills til it runs over into the standpipe.

The valve closes when the water is about 1/2" from the top of the standpipe so I don't think it could be that. Possibly there's a crack along the standpipe.

I have never seen one crack but that seems plausible to me.

Ditto. I chased a slow leak for days replacing a little piece at a time. I'd have been better off price-wise and time-wise just replacing it all at once.

I'm glad someone's concerned :)

A new flapper slowed the leak but didn't get rid of it completely. I guess the inlet valve tube is next.
