Reminds me of the effect on the average US pickup. I don't think SUV's are really any safer, unless they're hitting small targets.

Communist China doesn't strike me as a country with a high regard for human life.

Buying a $2.00 Chinese umbrella that might last you a week before being blown inside out in a light wind is one thing, but a Chinese automobile with the crash integrity of paper mache is quite another.

For safety's sake, I would rather take my chances with a 1966 Buick Electra 225, a battered but unbowed used American car, than with the very best offered by Communist China.

If the quality of Chinese cars is the same as Chinese tools..I think I'll stick with my Mercedes. :D

Well now,we already have throwaway lawnmowers,chainsaws,appliances,audio-visual equip,all produced in the former Peoples Repulic:eek:Items that are built down to a price rather than up to a standard so why should cars be any different?

The average hoople high-tails it to Goddamn Wal-Fart,Home Despot{or Deep Homo} et,al...in ignorance of anything but price buys himself a power tool,the thing craps out nigh a year later for $150.00 buys another mower or chainsaw.

Had my Stihl and Husqvarnas for 25 years,and they were used when I bought them,but I always was rather odd in that regard..............

All I can say is remember the Hyundai Excel? Talk about a death trap! Well try the new Sonata on for size, thats a less than 15 year jump in quality. The first (or second) international car by a country that never made cars for that market before failed? No way? Say it ain't so? Ford has been making cars for over a century and they can't even get it right.

My favorite quote in that article is "in the safety-conscious United States market is laughable." This statement is actually laughable :D The Ford Explorer was involved in highly publicized crashes and safety recall. Guess what happened, it sold more :D The American public cares about bargains and image baby!

World automakers are probably saying this is great, if we can get Chinese automakers to have a bad safety image before they start correcting the problem it will buy us some time. Next 15 years is going to be interesting.
