Deliverance... the movie...
I've heard about this movie for years and bought it some time ago.
I started watching it the other day and can;t get past the Ned Beatty rape scene. Is the rest of it worth watching or is it overblown. Seems really S L O W up to that point and the acting is horrible. .02 |
My older cousin showed me that movie when I was about 14 or so. It has tainted my mind since then.
That scene has inspired thousands of men to state "Man, I would totally kill that guy before he did that to me, or at least die trying...I'd go for the shotgun guy first...". I still twinge when I hear a banjo. ;) |
Never seen it, heard lots about it and mostly that one scene you refered too.
|
Oh, you mean the one where the redneck guy says, "Now why don't yew jes drap dem pants right on down . . . "
I always thought that was a real stretch to think those guys would take any pleasure from raping MEN. I mean they could have filmed it in a prison if they wanted to have that story line. |
This is going to come off as really pretentious, but the book is better than the movie. (I can't believe I just said that.) The writer does a great job of conveying the emotions of the various characters. Good book.

It is interesting how many men (not most of you guys) have little, or no, trouble watching a movie where a woman is raped and froced to have sexual intercourse against her will. The same guys, however, cringe at the idea of man-on-man rape. I do not wish to make some sort of a political point here. But as the son of a woman, the husband of a woman and the father of young women, I find the level of violence against women (including rape) depicted on movies and other media to be utterly despicable. While following the news of the young Ohio woman who was found dead this past Saturday (while carrying her near term baby girl) I heard that the leading cause of death among pregnant women is murder at the hands of a man known to the victim. That statistic is just mind-numbing and it speaks volumes about the low regard that our still male-dominated society has for women. This is a shonda! (Mistress will know what it means.) My 0.02 |
I don't like to watch violence against women either, Ernesto. Well, I like a lot of shooting, car chases, blowing stuff up, fist fights, plane crashes, chain saw mutilations, knife fights, eye-gouging, karate fighting, Ninja sword-fight scenes, nuclear explosions, planetary implosions, solar system melt-downs, and cursing, but I strictly draw the line at rape scenes!
Listen to you, dculkin! Aren't you sounding all pretentious readin' books and whunot. |

I wasn't turned off by the rape scene, nor did it bother me as it's only a movie. I could take it or leave it.
Same for women, it is only a movie. I do not condone it in real life, but I see where it is bothersome. I don't particularly care for the sex scenes in movies either, I think it's used as a filler for lack of a good storyline, a kiss or two, fine, but my imagination is good enough for the rest. .02 |

Agreed 99%. Don't know what a shonda is. I always though it was a pretty well done movie....kindof similar to "the deer hunter in its depiction of violence and manly companionship." Although the rape scene didn't particularly seem all that likely, I have never since felt the same way about "mountain folk"..... always feel just a bit careful around those parts. Tom W |
Just finished, wish I hadn't wasted the time.
Terrible, terrible flick!:curtain: |

And from the Yiddish dictionary: Shondah: (rhymes with Honda) a shame, a pity. A "shonda for the goyim" means to do something shameful, publicly witnessed by non-Jews, thus bringing shame upon Jews in general (because, the theory goes, we are all held accountable for the worst deeds of the worst of us.) Also, "Such a smart girl like that. It's a shonda she's such a meiskeit (physically unattractive person)." It is sometimes spelled w/o the "h" at the end. Being a lawyer you can't help but have a few (or a lot) Yiddish words and phrases enter into your vocabulary. |

Agreed 100% now. Tom W |
I thought that rape scene was rather funny. I know they were trying real hard to make it seem shocking but we laughed at that part.
At least that guy gets what he deserves.. |
