Who's a roller coaster fan?
 

I saw this on MSN this morning and have had a hankerin' to ride some great roller coasters. Who else here likes them? What's your favorite park for roller coasters?

Must be old, fast and wood.

I can't take the wooden ones anymore. They just about rattle my teeth out. I love the ones at Hershey Park and Busch Gardens.

I've done KingDaKa @ Great Adventure -- and I've done the wood one. The wood one is better!

I am. While I do enjoy riding the new steel, high-speed aerobatic ones, I've been on somewhat of a nostalgia kick in the past few years (maybe getting old and boring?). One of my favorites is the Boulder Dash at Lake Compounce in CT. It's a new wooden coaster that's built into the side of a mountain along the shore of a lake. Fairly high speed for a wooden coaster too.

Anybody here ever been to Cedar point (in Ohio, I think). It's supposed to be a great amusement park.

I used to take my son to Six Flags when he was little. I don't go there anymore. It's in Washington, DC's suburban ghetto, PG County.

Cedar Point is the best Coaster park of the 3 I've been to. (Kings Island, Cedar Point and Orland Disney complex.

Cedar Point is WELL worth the trip if you can get there, too many really long, really fast, and innovative (Top Fuel Dragster is their latest - it steam catapults you forward up a hill...and sometimes doesnt make it all the way up =)

I grew up in a town that had a terrific, old-school amusement park -- Playland, located in Rye, New York. Right up the coast from New York City.

Playland originally had two wooden roller coasters, including one called the "Airplane" that was designed by the same guy who built the "Cyclone" in Coney Island. The Airplane is gone now. It was only a legend when I was growing up.

But the other roller coaster is still there -- called the Dragon Coaster. And I rode it over and over and over again as a kid. I love roller coasters, and wooden roller coasters specifically, because of this one ride.

The Dragon Coaster is a pretty small, mild ride compared with the newer coasters I have ridden over the years, at different parks (much less its distant cousin, the Cyclone). But it is still my favorite, out of nostalgia and also because of the incredible views you get out over Long Island Sound a moment before you go around a bend, and the chains stop clanking, and feel gravity start to pull at your stomach, and WHOOOOOM -- you drop so hard and so fast that you start to rise out of the seat in your worn, 1930's-era car. Wicked. You follow the momentum of that drop for the rest of the ride.

Also ... there used to be a tiny roller coaster located in the shadow of the Dragon Coaster. It was called the "Monster Mouse." It was brutal. It was the sort of thing that kids would DARE each other to do. And everyone who has ever ridden it swears it was about the wildest, scariest coaster they've ever encountered -- probably because it was 90-degree turns and unexpected drops. I agree. Worse than the Shockwave at Kings Dominion in Virginia. A pity the mafia burned it down for the insurance money ... so it is said.
