Stunning piece of granite

I bought some granite to use in the house I am building today. Actually it was given to me by my granite cutter. I had taken him a load of granite that I owned and had removed from my office building and set aside. We were discussing different elements of the work and he started telling me that many of the pieces of granite he had were remanents from big jobs and that he would give them to me providing I pay him to cut them etc.

So I was having a look around and found this piece that is 9' long and about 17" wide. It is a cutoff remaining from a piece that was used for a counter top. It will work nicely for the eating bar which is raised from the main kitchen counter level.

One side of it is very rough and irregular with the round holes they bored to get the large block out of the quarry. There is a spectacular irregular lightning bolt of white quartz running on a diagonal through it. Any way I am going to have him just take the sharp edges off the irregular side and polish the side toward the sink. I am very excited about it.

I know, I should post a picture of it. Maybe I will later.

Hmm

Leave the holes on the end..either for the astethic(SP.) value or to do something cool to, like mounting some sort of appliance or something to.

Yeah, Tom, I'd love to see that, too.

I have a friend here in N. VA who has just opened a business selling granite tops, etc. His equipment is all CNC and they can do some amazing things with a very high degree of accuracy (1/1000th of an inch)

It's an interesting business. Granite tops are beautiful. Congrats on your aquisition.

Sounds like an interesting piece of stone. Make sure you seal it well or it can stain. Natural stone when used for countertops needs maintanence.

I bought a truckload of granite curbing from Georgia. My driveway is 275' long and I had price out Belgian Block which is widely used on Long Island, and the 5" x 12" granite curb ended up being cheaper. Nothing looks better than natural stone, and it will last forever. It is so heavy I just set it on a bed of crushed concrete under a layer of bluestone screenings and none of it has heaved in the last four years since I installed it.

I spent a summer working in a granite quarry in the Berkshires. Nothing like working with granite and turning it into useable object. Never did get to run the torch which burned the granite to get it out. Did a lot of splitting and polishing and sandblasting of names into headstones.

I made an outdoor grill using some free granite slabs and some fire brick. Made a great conversation piece during the divorce.

I recently visited my cousin and his family and they remodelled their kitchen and their new granite countertops had a 'rough' finish. Hard to describe, but it was not the usual polished finish, but rather a matte, slightly rough and dimpled surface. It's not the natural state, but rather a manufactured finish. Looks great though. I have never seen this look/finish before.

We installed black granite in our kitchen a couple of years ago and it although it looks elegant, it is a pain to keep clean. My cousin bought this finish since he has 4 kids and figured it would be easier to clean.

He's right.

They use torches to make that finish. I think It blows the quartz out of the granite.

We have granite in our kitchen.

It is actually recycled. I took a whole lot of it from the front of my building and saved it. IIRC this kitchen is the seventh we have used the recycled granite on. Since I am going to use the granite mentioned instead of my recycled stuff, we will have enough to do my daughter's house now too.

I find it really easy to clean. It is a dark reddish brown.

I smile every time I think of the fact that it was on my building for fifty years and now is being put to use in all these kitchens.
