DVD players in our cars...

Ok. Let's try this again, this time, I've been told there won't be any baiting... Let's hope it sticks.

Some people feel that children spend enough time already in front of the television... and less quality time with parents. What do you think?

What do you think of DVD players in cars?

They provide good entertainment for kids or adults on a longer trip. With that said I would never consider popping a DVD in on the way to the grocery store or the way left side is people with porn playing and no passengers in the vehicle.........way to weird for me. Wonder if there is a term for that?
That is extremely popular in Jackson.

To me, placing DVD players in an automobile only promotes greater use of those vehicles, thus promoting further global warming, increasing our dependency on fossil fuels that are sold to us by factions that use the sales proceeds to fuel anti-American terrorist activities, and can only prolong our military presence in Iraq.

We have a DVD player in the minivan and they are indispensible for long trips. That is captive time anyway, might as well entertain them. But then our kids don't ever watch TV any other time, since we don't have a TV in the house. So a DVD in the van once in a blue moon is alright by me.

Since the kids are occupied with the DVD on a long trip and a two year old is not going to listen to stories or marval at billboards for 10 hours don't you think that it safer to have the DVD on board so the driver can concentrate on road duties and not a restless youngster in the back seat? I don't care who is in the back seat you can't ignore an unhappy kid.

We had a DVD system in our old car. Their great on long trips, but utterly useless around town.

I'm torn.

I can see how they would make a long trip go much better with the little ones, I have been on 35 hour drives with a 5 & 7 y/o girl in the back seat (12 years ago now), and shorter ones since the boy was born.

But the car window can be a real educator, and I think TV video/ games/ movies... are continuing to take the machine's toll on it's masters.

[X] - Not only are they a great thing, but they are a bad idea.

What did parents do with their children on long trips before they had their DVD in their vehicles?

I spy with my little eye something...

I am thinking of something and it is a mineral...

Yes! Interaction with the family! I love the idea!!! But wait... that takes effort & energy, and most importantly, patience.

It's just easy to put the DVD in and cruise along.

Ahhhhh... much better.

Well there are definitely instances when using a DVD player for the kids could be beneficial to all. Like when driving conditions are bad and Mom and Dad need to navigate/concentrate, one child is napping and you want the other to be quiet, etc.

Like anything else new, it's about balance, IMO.
