Access Hard drive on a PCI controller

My mother board died so I figured I'd build a new sys.

I have a SIIG UltraATA 133 PCI controler and I have an IDE Hard drive and an old Zip drive conected to the PCI card. I have never used one of these before and I have no idea how to access the hard drive or the zip. The drivers are installed and there are no error messages in the device manager.

I'm running XP pro with service pack 2 installed. I have searched the net but was unable to find what I was looking for.

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

David

David, the hdd connected to the IDE card has to be set as slave for Windows to see it. Do you see your IDE or Zip listed under exlorer?

It was set as "slave" and no dice. I took a crap shot and changed it to "master" and viola, I have access to the Hard drive. I disconnected the Zip. I guess that will have to be slave when I hook it back up.

At least I know I have access to the hard drive.

Yep, probably the boot card ROM expects the hdd to be master instead of slave, well as long as it worked.

What motherboard are you using? If you are using an 80-pin UDMA cable in IDE 1, you should set the HDD to 'CS' and plug it in at the top end of the cable. Slave drive uses the middle (drive also set to 'CS'). CS stands for cable select and the position of the drive on the cable determines the master/slave status.

Really depends on what peripherals you are using - CD/DVD drives, etc.

As for the ZIP, is it connecting to the PCI card using a parallel port or USB? If parallel, you should check your BIOS and see if the onboard parallel port is enabled and if it has been assigned an IRQ address. What brand/model of card is it? You could have a conflict.

Also - in your BIOS, did you enable 'Plug and Play OS'?

If he is connecting the Zip to the card, I would guess its IDE.

The mother board is an Abit. I do not have the box in front of me now (I'm at work) but it has 1 IDE and 2 SATA. The 2 burners are on the IDE. I have a SATA HDD. The ZIP and the 2nd HDD are on the PCI card via 2 separate IDE cables. I am trying to cannibalize as many old components to work with the newer system to keep costs down.

I'm going to exchange the HDD. I got a 300GB but Office max has a 500GB SATA for only $10 more. Remember where when 300GB used to be A LOT of memory? Those were the days …. Oh wait, that was only last week hee hee.

I do not remember seeing "plug and play" in the bios when I looked. Do all Bios have that option. As I recall, I have a Phoenix Bios.

Zues

I have always wondered this. Is there any difference to setting the drives Master/Slave vs Cable Select.

I've always used the specific setting

I generally have had good success with rebuilding my computers with butane lighters, paper clips and acid core solder.

The SIIG card may not have capability to see the ZIP drive. Some of the PCI IDE ATA cards did not have capability to see anything other than hard drives. I would check the manual to see if ZIP or other ATA devices are compatible with it. I presume a newer one would be robust enough to handle anything.

The manual and the SIIG knowledge base are about as usefull as t!ts on a bull. They cover install problems with the card itself. As far as how to use it or problems with components installed on it, you are on your own.

As long as it see the HDD that is the most important thing. The ZIP is a nice thing to have but not needed.

I'LL play with it tomorrow when I have time. Need to figure out why my wifes 124 A/C fan quit. Please be a blown fuse .. please be a blown fuse .... please.....................
