Horny Toad

I found a horny toad in the back yard yesterday. Haven't seen one of those in 30 yrs or so. I thought they were extinct.
I guess the fire ant poisons didn't get 'em all.

They make cool little reptile pets. My brother got started with out with one which led to a lifelong interest in reptiles.

Don't they have a specialty license plate in Texas with a picture of one on it?

That's good to hear.

I guess they must be on a come back. Lately, we’ve seen a couple here and there at our place on Possum Kingdom. You’re right though. It’s been some time before they’ve started popping up again.

I remember as a kid, living in Mineral Wells (Ft. Walters), you couldn’t take a step outside without seeing one or two under foot. We had a little plastic swimming pool that we put sand in, and could all but fill with the little guys in an afternoon.

I’m glad to see/hear they’re making a comeback.
Thanks for the good news.

I've encountered them a few times in the AZ high country. They are like reptilian ground sloths, in that I wonder how they ever came to survive at all. These wonderful little creatures have little means of defense, are slow afoot, and have a very low fear quotient, relying almost entirely upon camouflage for defense. I have on more than one occasion, bent down and picked one up in my hand, with no protest or escape attempt from the lizard.

I probably killed the last one by disturbing its dwelling by clearing up. I hope not.

Lawnmowers and bushhogs are tough on the mindless little critters.

^ I thought geckos were ill-equipped to fend for themselves until I ran into a few of these guys. I realize there are many species, perhaps some are better equipped for survival than those I've encountered.
