Talking MANS BEST FRIEND? Dog Shoots Owner

Posted by Melissa Moon
Dog shoots owner

MEMPHIS- You hear all the time about dogs attacking humans, but never shooting them.
But that's exactly what happened early this morning in a freak accident in Raleigh. Memphis police say a great dane named King George accidentally knocked a gun off a table and shot his owner.

Terrance Brooks, a neighbor, says King George is big dog, but a sweet one. He says the dog is always excited to see him.

"He just runs up and starts licking on people and jumps on people a lot," said Brooks.

Memphis police say early this morning the dog got a little too excited and knocked a handgun gun off a table. The gun went off and shot the dog's owner in the back.

"The tail knocked the gun off the table and it accidentally discharged," said Sgt. Vince Higgins with the Memphis Police Department.

The shooting victim is now listed in stable condition at the med, but reportedly could have some permanent injuries. Police say this is a tragic lesson on gun safety.

Who leaves a loaded handgun in Condition 1 at the edge of a table? Must have been an old gun with no safety bar or trigger interlock.

TV report shows a couple of kids petting the drooling "shooter"...so to add to your response, who leaves a loaded pistol on the table with kids around?!!

Are you suggesting premeditated?

Quite! I mean only the most dogged persistence would enable the pet to estimate optimal target time and area.

Dogs can get away with anything in Memphis - you will never see any charges filed.

A parent who teaches the kids gun safety? My ex-gf's father did that all the time. I used to know many families that had shotguns and rifles around the house. We didn't have guns growing up. Still managed to get into all sorts of trouble. I almost cut my toe off with a knife one time. Dad proceeded to educate my butt on the safe handling of knives. Made me much safer even today. With knives, at least.

I haven't had a gun that could drop and fire yet. Probably must be a real old one like you said.

loaded weapon on edge of table, with no drop saftey... odd. none of mine would have gone off. then again, none of mine would have been on the table. my 4 year old is too cantankerous... she would shoot me, if I left it out.

There are many gun manufactures that have paid substantial judgments for this defect. I was involved in a case and the gun was manufactured in 1997. One gun that probably many here have heard of that has a history of dropfiring is the famed Walther ppk .280.

280? Which one is that? Or did you mean the 380?

I can't remember if it did or not but did the hammer come in direct contact with the firing pin?
