90 percent of the vitamin C used in the U.S. comes from China

Quote:
According to the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a dietary supplement industry trade group, 90 percent of the vitamin C used in the U.S. comes from China. Only one Western company still manufactures it, in Holland.
I don't know about the accuracy of that statement but it looks like there is a bunch of good information on dietary supplements at this site.

How many here take a multivitamin? I used to take one every day till my doctor said don't bother.

I still take one now and then though.

MSM + glutamine, and some Mangosteen juice everyday.

It's all you need.

I take several vitamins and mineral suppliments everyday. I don't know how much it helps, but, hopefully, it doesn't HURT anything. The best way to get these things is in your food, but it's really not realistic to think that any of us is going to achieve that.

I hope I'm not taking anything that comes from China. Oooo! THAT'S a scary thought.

I think a lot of the vitamins you take pass right through you. If some of them "stick," then I'll keep on taking them. I know that when I was having some joint pains in my knees, I took the MSN Condroitin (sp?), it appeared to have made a big difference. It is purported to nourish the cartilage or whatever it is in your joints that cushions and lubricates them.

Dr. Andrew Weil, a guy who I respect all in all, says that with current depleted soils here and there, it's not wise to take for granted that all needed minerals and vitamins are going to be in our foods in proper quantities.

This is now an accepted fact that you can read in Nutrition textbooks. Plant foods vary greatly in vitamin and mineral content depending on where and how they were grown.

I quit taking vitamins but I know that I don't get enough of some because of my eating habits.

Taking supplements may interfere with your body's natural internal production. Some of the B vitamins are produced by the natural flora in your digestive tract. I have never tried to nail down the details.

Keep in mind that vitamins are produced by Big Pharma, princes of propaganda.

Vitamins are commodities mass produced by the cheapest manufacturer, hence the 90% Made in China statistic. Big Pharma is not involved in vitamin manufacture, though some have consumer health divisions which would purchase from, you guessed it, the lowest priced manufacturer.

My doctor also says to not bother with multivites unless a specific deficiency has been identified.

To get full nutrition, one has to eat a balanced meal three times a day, that has to consist of various types of veggies, in today's lifestyle, thats an impossible task to acheive, hence the vitamins, don't know if they are placebo or real but in my personal experience of having taken multi vitamins for the last 20 years, I have felt better and never worse in any way.

Double check this fact if it is of any consequence to you. You may be surprized.
