anyone know vw?

My girlfriend has a 92 vw cabriolet that stumbles and misses bad but only at acceleration and if you blip the throttle in neutral. The idle is pretty good though. I pulled all the spark plugs and they looked perfectly normal. Maybe any of you guys or gals have had experience with these German machines.

I had the same trouble with my 92 Golf GTi, it was something to do with the airflow sensor, I changed the oxygen sensor as well but the problem never really went away, in the end I had to sell it off.

I was looking at VW/Audi A4s back in 2000. Research revealed world wide back orders on emissions sensors. Since then I've got a friend who is the manager of a VW service department. I joked about him breaking stuff so customers would have to come back and he said, "It's a VW, they break themselves."

I can't really help other than to suggest you trade it for a different car, but I would guess either an emissions problem or electrical one. Maybe the plug wires?

Good luck, my 93 Cabriolet runs great for 20 minutes or so then starts running rich and bucking and snorting. I have changed everything I could think or except the o2 sensor, and my mechanic swears that the Digifant injection, which he calls "DigiFART" is horrible to deal with. His answer is to put Webers on it.

My '94 Jetta idled horribly for a while. Have your mechanic very thoroughly check grounds in the engine bay, especially those having to do with the engine management computer. That's what finally cured mine.

This one doesnt idle bad, just when you give it gas. Last year the maf sensor was replaced, but it says ford on it(???) I said it was time to get rid of it a long time ago.

Also, my pcv valve (or whatever VW calls it) was bad, sending a lot of oil through the air intake and onto the MAF sensor.

Check that as well.

The engine temperature sensor fails causing too rich or too lean conditions. They are made of thin aluminum that corrodes through and then antifreeze gets inside the sensor.

Check the O2 sensor

Try unplugging the O2 sensor. That should put the computer into "open mode" If it runs better, than the sensor is bad. They wear out and cause the computer to go way lean.
