Talk about your excessive shipping charges...

South Carolina contractor pleads guilty to defrauding Defense Department.

ETA: Here's another link to the story.

Quote:
An owner of a defunct company accused of bilking the Defense Department out of more than $20 million, including charging nearly $1 million to ship two 19-cent washers, pleaded guilty Thursday to federal wire fraud and money laundering.
Quote:
From 1997 to 2006, Corley and Wooten exploited an automated shipping payment system designed to speed shipments bound for U.S. forces overseas by submitting huge bills to ship inexpensive items, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said among the fraudulent charges were ones for $998,798 to ship two 19-cent lock washers, $492,097 to ship an $11 threaded plug, and $499,569 to ship 10 cotter pins worth $1.99 each.
Serious consequences for Corley, who pleaded guilty.
Serious consequences for Wooten, who, according to the article, committed suicide.

Good thing they weren't shipping tanks or jet engines or something big and heavy!

See. I don't blame the guy who wrote the invoice nearly as much as the idiot who paid the bill.

I am paid twice on invoices all the time. I write them a letter and tell them. They often say to keep the money and apply it to their next order.

Pays to be honest.

Halliburton? No way. They're too good to get caught that easily. Too well-connected, too. Besides, a couple million dollars is chump change for them.

Sorry, didn't expect it to become a register-to-read article.

Here's another link to the story.

automated shipping payment system

you are blaming a computer, right?

Before you retort, "...a computer only does what it is programed to do..." once an 'automated' system is implemented it is not attended, hence the term automated.

Aside from that, throw the book at the bums.

This case is from the town across the lake from me (about 10 miles away). Both of the perps are women. And one did kill herself last year at her lake house.

The State Newspaper (Columbia, SC) says today they invoiced the DOD for shipping costs totaling over $71 million since 1997!!!

I Googled Charlene Corley and found several hits detailing the Lexington County Council honoring the sisters for community support.

I think there will be more to this story.

Edit: Just read the Charlotte Observer story. Did you notice this:

"The investigation revealed the company had sometimes double-billed for supplies and charged even when the government denied its services, said Army Lt. Col. Brian Maka, a Pentagon spokesman. The billing of the washers was one of the most egregious charges, he said.

"A 19-cent lock washer you could put an envelope in the mail and mail it with a 14-cent stamp," Maka said."

A Lt. Col. thinks you can mail an envelope for 14-cents. I think someone's lost touch with reality.

I wonder how many people are charging $5,000 to ship $.19 washers and getting away with it.
