Thinking of a Porsche 99 SC Targa (picture)
http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y206/mrbrickdriver/?action=view¤t=porsche.jpg
This is the first Porsche that I looked at, I will probably contine to look as this one has 187,000 miles but is very nice in the way that it has every single recored and has had all the services since new. Seems very nice, but he want's $10,000 for it, and I know that I will be looking at engene work before too long as he has not gone through it in the twelve years that he has owned it. The car is a 1980, I understand that the transmissions were improved in 1987? Anyway, I thought it was a very nice car, but we will have to see. I looked at another one this weekend for $9,000 and it needed paint detail work electriclal work and a refinsh on the wheels. But I don't have to have one, and I may not go their as If I do, I would probably have to sell the six series an truth be told, it is a much more confortable car. What are your opinions on this car? Thanks. |

My SIL likes porsches, and always has one or two around. He currently has an eighty something 944 non turbo and a 74 carrera. I like the way that they drive.
My favorite machinist has had a few porsche engines in his shop. I watched one evening when he was trying to get a long stud out of the crankcase. The possibility of very expensive engine repairs slows me down from owning any porsches. If I were to sell off my other old sports car I have considered an early porsche turbo though. But if i wanted one I would contact Jim Schrager who writes for Sports Car Market on porsches and lives in South Bend for a recommendation. Tom W

My richer brother had a '74 (IIRC) targa where the PO put a 1980 motor in it - excellent car, I drove it a few times and IMHO - thats how a sports car should be.. that said...
-12qt oil changes - I thought 8qts were bad -eggspensive parts for everything - this keeps me away also. -A/C in 1980 ? on the other side - From what I remember him saying- the SC's were the first models with power brakes and steering - so they are a lot easier to drive on a daily basis. and I LOVE the look of the p-wagen in your picture - compact size, enough motor, t-tops, (no computers, sorry, dieselhead talking there...) like I said before - what a sports car should be. from what I remember, $10k sounds like too much for one with so many miles, not a good deal IIRC (its been a while since I've looked though) -John

I think you mean 1989, not 1999, especially at that price.
The 99 is the first of the watercooled engines and they body changed quite a bit that year. I am looking for one as well and have seen a few 99's that I may consider. The one thing holding me back is my lack of knowledge, maintenance wise. I do not know any porsche mechanics and would have to buy an aftermarket warranty from my credit union for 1500.00 to cover major repairs. Having said that, best of luck.

My feeling about this is that these are specialty sports cars, not so much like a generic sedan or minivan, and there is no reason to confine yourself to standard ways of shopping for the best one.
Probably you could do well looking or asking on the enthusiasts' lists like www.rennlist.com and such, and being open to areas in general where the nicest ones are found, in abundance, such as Southern California, where they are full of car enthusiasts, have a mild climate where rot and rust is unlikely, unlike, say, Michigan, Ohio or Vermont. Patience and luck will net you a good one, and if you can find a seller with a good reason to sell one, ie, a job or residence change, a new baby, lust for a "new" model, you could wind up with a beautiful car at a good price if you are the right guy at the right time, looking. These cars aren't thick on the ground like Toyotas, but they are out there and from time to time do show up for sale Happy hunting. I'd definately consider the SoCal idea - maybe, fly in, drive home? It could be a glorious mini vacation too if it worked.
