Heading to D.C. Lock up your wives and mistresses

Well with all the Info Tech jobs in NYC going to China and India, I have decided it is time to leave the private sector and do my bit for the nation...

In other words, I am in the process of getting a Federal job at DHS leading an I.T. team. The job is in downtown D.C. so this means pulling stumps and leaving New Paltz.

I am asking all you guys in the D.C. area to help me out. I will be looking for a house, preferably at least 90 years old (my current house was built in 1824) on enough property to either have a barn or have room for a 4+ car garage.
My commute is currently 84 miles door to door so anything inside say a sixty mile radius would be a step up for me.

Let me know which towns are must visits and which to avoid. My price range, since I will be a Gov't worker will be in the mid 200->300K tops.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to smoking up the beltway in the 300SD soon.

Oh any info about the local MB club and which indys are better than others would be great too

I appreciate it!

Joe

Welcome to DC, Joe. I'm looking forward to meeting you.

I'd stick with VA as far as real estate goes. Depending upon what type of house you want, you'd probably be out towards Fairfax or Manassas in that range.

Thanks.. it will good meeting you too..

I will look in the Manassas and Fairfax areas this weekend. I am making a quick trip down there Friday evening for the weekend to get a feel of the place. I have been to DC a few times, but never with the intention of staying.

I need a place with no home owner's association as I always end up fighting with them (a personality flaw of mine) Are those areas more rural than say the Seven Corners area or Arlington?

Do you know anybody who commutes in from West Virginia?

Thanks again!

In your stated price range you will find condos and townhouses in Fairfax County, Virginia. You will need to look at Winchester and beyond to the west, and Fredericksburg to the south for acreage. Prices in the metro DC area are very high, and the commute is as bad as it gets in the USA.
Best of Luck
Mark

You should come to Powerpig's GTG in Leesburg on Sunday if you're going to be here then. You can meet a bunch of other MB enthusiasts.

Be sure to check out the traffic for the morning and evening commute before you make any kind of decision. Its no picnic. For what you are looking for I would suggest the Shepherdstown WV or maybe Dickerson MD area, and take the train in to DC to save your sanity. Further south is Fredericksburg VA which also offers a train to downtown.

Traffic here stinks with a capital T. Welcome and we look forward to having you visit at our next GTG. Welcome to the neighborhood where ever that may be. You won't find anything in north arlington for under 1.5 mil with a patch of grass thats 2X3.
