problem transferring files with XP pro
My dad asked me about a problem he has transferring files. He has a P3 and P4 both with XP pro. He's transferring files from the P3 to the P4 using a 1GB USB stick. He frequently gets a "folder name too long or invalid" error when copying files from the stick to existing folders in the P4. He can put the files in a new folder, but gets the same error transferring files to existing folders.
What's going on and what can he do to get the transfer to work on his terms? Thanks, Sixto 87 300D |

He may be exceeding the 255 character limit for folders.
Remember, you have to add up ALL of the characters from the drive and all subfolders. For example this folder is about 70 characters: C:\work related stuff\special parts vendors\machine shops\angle brackets\steel

Someone at work asked me to do the same thing and a file exceeded the character limit as well- I just renamed the file, and tranferred it. Or you could just burn a cd and do it that way.

Sixto, you have to copy the files you want to save at a lower directory level to get around that 255 limit.
If you have an many file folders with many sub folders on the desktop for example copy those directly into the USB drive since just by being there the path is long already being C:\Documents and Settings\Sixto\Desktop\Main Folder\Subfolder |
