Wasn't that the idea behind Smokey Yunick's experimental little turbo chrysler econobox back in the eighties?
As I remember it it sank....one of Smokey's few mechanical failures. Tom W

I hear about stuff like this all the time but I'm a bit skeptical. I find it hard to beleive that a car manufacture wouldn't do this for a 50% increase in MPG. These days MPG's sells cars imagin what GM would give if they could make a big SUV that got 25mpg! People would eat that up, GM would make a bundle.
I suspect that these ideas may work under controlled conditions, but not so in the real world. On another topic the new direct injection gas engines are probably about as efficient as they are going to get.

diesels and electric cars are the future... electric cars the most...
take that early 20th century gas cars... the 'lectric car is coming back |

If the battery issue can be solved I agree with you. We need a cheap, environmently friendly battery, that can be recharged quickly and lasts at least 400-500 miles.
Then we need nuclear powerplants so we don't burn a billion tons of coal to make that juice.

WE just need to make a deal with some third world country to take the nuc waste.

Gasoline direct injection will do most of this.
Already on some BMW. http://www.all4engineers.com/index.php;do=show/alloc=1/lng=en/id=6752/site=a4e/sid=103854865046d085272db3f850675283

Smokey Yunick, I read that article years ago.
Been trying to remember who it was about lately. As I remember he had several cars, all running 3 or 5 cylinders. The diff was the turbo was AFTER the carb, versus the normal before, this effectively used the turbo as a mixmaster for the fuel. And the radiator heat was used to preheat the fuel first. Also because of something else, there was virtually no waste heat, much of the energy from an internal combustion engine is lost as heat. Because of the design there was NO pinging, they lugged away from a stop light in 4th gear nothing, prefectly smooth. Wonder what ever happened to it, he was getting phenomenal mileage for the day, along with reduced pollution. And it didn't seem to affect HP.

buddy and me talked about this years ago.As most of our landfills are almost filled to capacity we figured it would be a great way to get rid of our garbage.instead of dropping bombs drop garbage.make iraq the worlds landfill.we could even get rid of old tires too!!

Also imagine the environmental impact of battery disposal on a large scale....we would be trading one headache for another. Our luck would have it that we would be held hostage by some foreign country that made cheaper and better batteries than we do, our next war could be over electrons.... true irony would be if it was the middle east.

There are alweays trhese stories about great gas saving carbs that were bought up by the big bad oil companies. I've lloked into some of them, and they have very limited use in car design. also the concept doesn't pass the smell test. As was posted avove, If GM or Ford could market a 50 mpg Suburban/Hummer/Excursion==what do you think that would be worth?

Disposing of batteries properly is really easy to do.
Just have to get people to do it. Probably the Goverment will screw it up like CA is trying to do with the mercury in CF bulbs. Passing a law today requiring the elimination of regular bulbs and "Oh we'll worry about the disposal of the CFs later".

[quote=Emmerich;1602172]Key word is cheap. I would like to have a set of the batteries they carry on the space shuttle. I would guess they are slightly more expensive than a Die Hard.quote]
Batteries are much too heavy to carry into space. The shuttle uses fuel cells that run on hydrogen. The fuel cells are waaayy more expensive than a Diehard. |
