Carleton, replaced the .45-70 today.
Bought it for less than the profit I made off selling the Sharps reproduction. Got an el cheapo H&R .38-55 with peeps. I am going to hunt primitive whitetail season with it and maybe hogs. If I like it I will scope it for next year. It doesn't fit as well as the Sharps but it also doesn't weigh 20# and shoots alot flatter round. Complete impulse purchase, but may like it. Going to have to buy some brass and boolits this wkd at a gunshow and get them loaded--no local source for ammo!

This is as good as I can do: http://www.chuckhawks.com/h-r_rifles.htm
It is a cheap gun bought for a particular purpose that I am not sure I am even into at this point. |

I'd be interested in knowing what the trigger is like on that H&R. Periodically, I've thought about getting a NEF/H&R in .308 for a farm truck gun but, I've wondered about the triggers on those units. If they take 19# of pull and have 6" of creep I'm not interested.
The pig gun du jour is our model '94 .44 Win Mag which, is just too nice to get beaten up riding around in the TOAD. Consequently, the oinkers get a free ride a lot of the time.

The trigger isn't bad on this one--maybe 7-8#? It wasn't too bad to me, but with iron only, I may see about dialing it down some more since it is a hammer gun. |

The .308 is probably a silly notion but, one of these days, I'll have me a Springfield Armory M1A. Having a couple of hi-powers with common ammo would make things nice and simple.

I has a screw, but I wouldn't think it would travel much. It looks like mine is all the way tight. .308 is awesome, but I don't know I would want one in a cheap breach loader unless it was a Rugar International or something. Or just get a Rem 700--used for nothing. |

I assume since you're from the South that you use primitive dogs like these. |

^^^ Hog hunting in Jena! Ha!
I was in the Navy with a guy from Frogmore LA (not too far from Jena) and we planned, but never went hunting out there. |

38-55 is easy to find the brass provided you do your own reloading, apropos of which I don't like jacketed short rounds but nice, long hard lead alloy. I also concur that today's 45-70 rounds loaded with smokeless are poor performers. Remember thta they were deliberately underpowered so trapdoor Springfield shooters would not blow the breechblock into their foreheads. I load them full with half Pyrodex and half smokeless and in a good falling block like a Sharps this is of no concern. Best of luck with your new gun and let me know if you can what the twist ratio is,then I can suggest what would be an optimal load for you. Put a cleaning rod with a tight bore brush and pull it out next to a yardstick with a marked reference point on the rod, then see how many turns or lack thereof you get in 12".http://www.midwayusa.com/ebrowse.exe/browse?TabID=1&Categoryid=7577&categorystring=9315***652***670***9013***
