Caution: This thread contains adult subjects

Ok, they're not all that adult, but I thought I'd add the disclaimer. What I'm really looking for is a bit of advice...

We need a new mattress. Ours is worn out. When the bed sheets are removed, it's lumpy, turning it only masks the problem for a while, and it has some sort of pillowtop making it nigh unflippable. It's no longer comfortable, often causing the female half of us to wake up with back pain. We've been traveling lately and have spent 7 of the last 11 nights in several different motels. Those nights were all trouble free, but back home=back pain it seems. At this point it really seems like we've just managed to wear this one out. It looks like a 15 year old mattress that's been through several moves, and sleeps about as well.

Ok, so this is hardly rocket science right? "Go get a new mattress dingus", is probably being muttered by several people at this very moment, and as well it should be. Here's the thing, this mattress isn't all that old. It seems we've just worn it out. In about a year and a half. And it isn't a particularly cheap mattress, I believe it is a Sealy Posturepedic something-or-other. Whatever it was Costco was selling. They usually are good about warranty and returns and the like, so we'll be looking into warrantly this weekend, they say no paperwork is required.

If warranty is to be had, I imagine we'll take whatever they give us. Recent phone conversations with Costco indicate that this might just be what happens, but we might opt to upgrade at the same time. Even if that's not the case, or if we do choose to upgrade, does anyone have any good suggestions for a mattress that is both comfortable for sleep and rugged enough for sex? Does anyone have one of the Tempurpedic foam mattresses? Are they all they're cracked up to be? Are they hot, or cold? We were worried that they're not firm enough for sex, and we'd end up sinking in... Mattress sales people act kinda funny when two adults are in the showroom bouncing on the beds on their knees trying to see if they sink in too far... I'd hate to have to get two complete beds, on for sex and one for sleep. At least I think I'd hate that. On the other hand it could be kinda cool... Maybe pick up a third for the dogs...

So if anyone has any info that may prove useful, even if it's non-conclusive, please add it. The more thought we put into it beforehand, and the more knowledge we have, hopefully the better off we'll be. I hate to make purchases like this, where you have to spend a fair amount of money, but can't really do any true tests of the product until after you've already bought it. Why don't mattress companies enlist motel as their showrooms, offer a website where you can locate a mattress to "try before you buy"? Motels could benefit by offering a $10-$20 a night charge to upgrade to your room for a normal stay (with premium mattress), and mattress sales people could offer vouchers or rebates or reimbursments to people who do end up buying. Maybe I should go buy a motel instead of a mattress...

Anyway, thanks in advance.

MV

There`s a 40 percent off sale going on for the Westin Heavenly bed. Got one shipped four around $900. Go to fatwallet.com and do a search. There`s a long thread about it there. Best bed I`ve ever owned!

I would be pissed if I only got a year and a half out of a mattress. < insert snarky comment about wearing it out here> But OTOH, after a couple different no-so-cheap mattesses we ended up buying a Sleep Number mattress and love it. SWMBO has a bad back so support is real important to her. She's able to adjust it to whatever she needs to. Me, I don't think I've touched it after the initial fill. I could sleep on a concrete slab or on a pile of cottonballs, it doesn't matter to me. But for her it made a huge difference.

I know I'd be hard pressed to give up on a warranty after only 1 1/2 yrs., but I'd recommend one.

Pillow top = Profit top for the mattress store. I never knew anyone who liked it. I like the Simmons. I can't comment on the others, I haven't tried them. (I wasn't able to find anything on fatwallet)
