Importing car from Canada to US

Anybody know what you have to do in order to do this? I assume at a minimum you have to replace the speedometer (or may modifiy it?)

The threshold question is: How old is the car?

If it is older than 25 years old, the DOT/EPA restrictions don't apply.

If it is newer, they would. Contact a registered importer from the Government list and ask them.

There shoud be more information available by hitting the search button; this has come up before

Check www.canadiandriver.com also, it was discussed more than once on their forum.

"Brucemendel" on the W126 section of www.benzworld.com knows how to to get them in from Canada, it is a way to "backdoor" mint condition W126 coupes and sedan in from Japan, where a lot of nice ones are hitting the market there these days, into the USA

Depends on model, age. It is next to impossible to import a US car into Canada, I looked into it. Too costly to make all the modifications - including bumper assembly, instrument cluster, etc. and plenty of paperwork. Not sure about Canada to US, although I think Canadian standards are stricter, so it may be easier.

Are you enquiring about an older car? I don't see why someone would want to bring in a newer car, with the rust issues here and the currency market currently near par...?

The procedure is not complex if the identical car was sold in the USA .

The government let's the auto manufacturer handle the paperwork... A dealership should be able to look at the vin # and tell you exactly what needs done to the car and how much it will cost for them to do it.
Importing Cars from Canada
The link in the second post of the above thread details the laws involved.

Theoretically, the Canadian and US cars wouldn't be the same.

Unlike the USA, all Canadian cars are all required to have daytime driving lights and KPH speedometers on them.

However, most GM cars in the USA are sold new with DRLs, and most cars sold in the USA have speedometers marked BOTH in mph and kph, making that requirement moot.

Apart from these minor issues, the cars are "identical" per emissions and safety configuration.

People can refer to NHTSA and DOT sites for complete documentation. Again, if identical cars were sold in both countries, the process is very simple.

If you're looked at a 1995 XYZ car that was sold in Ca and not in the USA, good luck!

Thanks for the help guys. The car that I am interested in is a 1992 500E. I wouldn't expect it to be much of a problem to import. I would think that the only think that needed changed would be the speedometer and I wonder if just the face plate would all that would need to be changed on it.
