CMOS Clock meltdown.
Got a desktop at work that works fine in all respects except: that the clock looses an hour aprox. once per hour. Runs fine till then.
This machine is one of two that were washed! by a misguided collegue. Here is the strange part... both washed identical desktops produce the same result of the clock resetting approx. once per hour with the functioning (of the two) hard drives in the seperate chassis. The hard drive in question has been swept for missing windows updates virus's, and spy/mal ware by a 2007 version of an up to date internet security program and found to be fine. No hardware conflicts in the system... and the CMOS battery is brand new. Anyone ever seen anything like this?

Might be a dumb question, but are you set for the correct time zone?

How were the systems "washed"? Was the BIOS updated and corrupted?
What model motherboard is it? |

Holy hallelula!
It seems to be working again. Shut it down... again... took out the new battery and pressed the CMOS restet button and reinserted the battery... again... Set the time on the CMOS... again... and it's been keeping time for over 3 hours (a new record) and the correct time even survived a restart and a shut down/start. It's funny, with a light switch if you turn it on and it dosen't work, it's a burned out light bulb, but with a computer, you have to turn it on and off one time past possible usefulness for it to start working again. BTW the time-zone is good - washed like a bottle of spray cleaner sprayed onto a paper towel and the mother board et all wiped with said towel - and it's a cheapo Compaq evo D510. Thanks for your time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that its still chugging in the AM.

I've actually washed several donated computers. The latest was completely choked with dust, fur and cigarette ash - the power supply fan had jammed and burned out, which was why the computer would shut down when it got too hot.
I took the computer down to bare boards and blew everything out with compressed air, but it still stank. Having nothing to lose, I dunked everything in warm soapy water, rinsed and dried off with compressed air. After putting everything back together with a new fan, it worked just fine - and has done so now for three months non stop. BTW - it runs Ubuntu.
