The longest 6 inches

Man, the last 6 inches using the post hole digger are an absolute bear. I hit every rock and root, plus its particularly hot and humid here today

Time for a beer!

Probably something about not getting any the night after using a post hole digger all day, because your back hurts too bad.

You need a San Angelo bar for pursuading obstructions at the bottom of the hole.

I personally feel that post hole diggers are the tool of the devil. But, some are better than others.

For example, this kind:

Is a lot easier to use in deep hole than this kind:

There's a layer of red clay 12" to 30" down in some the pastures at BHF...boring through it for a post is like trying to penetrate a layer of hard rubber. Armstrong-powered PHDs just bounce off it and the PTO-driven PHD's auger hits it and just slides around. Fortunately, there are hardly any rocks so most fence post installation is done with the tractor bucket.

Welll, you do live in ROCKville MD! I'm guessin here, but there's a reason the town isn't West Bethesda or something.

I installed a split rail fence in my old yard years ago in the middle of August, ground drier and harder than concrete. After I got down maybe a foot, I just filled the hole with water and let it settle in and soften the dirt. No rocks and roots tho. Have one on me:

Indeed I do. Unfortunately its not something I do for a living, so I just sweat it out when the occasional hole must be dug. I keep thinking someday I will have all these toys at my disposal, most likely when I no longer have a need for them.

Like a charm messy but gets the job done lickety split. Look at a strip mining operation.
