My wife killed my cat!!!

Man, what a horrible weekend!!! Sunday my wife and her oldest son decided to make a quick run to the grocery store so out to the garage they went. She backed straight out of the garage, missed the cat with the rear tire and completely crushed it with the front. As soon as she ran over the cat (her name was Onyx) she immediately knew what happened. Her 15 year old son jumped out of the car, saw a large pool of blood and came running into the house screaming. I ran out the front door, saw the bloody mess and knew right away that Onyx was killed immediately, although she was still moving. So I turn my attention to my wife who is a HUGE animal lover and has never killed another living thing. To say she was emotional is like saying the Titanic was a boat. I don't think I've ever seen another person so torn up over the loss of a pet.....she feels horrible......Onyx was my favorite cat and was with me for a long time. Digging a hole to bury her in the back yard was hard.....putting Onyx in the hole and covering her with dirt was heart wrenching.....I shed many a tear while burying her and I miss her sweet face terribly. I wish I could get the mental picture of Onyx being crushed to death out of my head. Boy am I sad

Wow, that's awful, HD. Sorry to hear that. I have only recently agreed (reluctantly) to let my older daughter have a kitten. He's only a couple of months old and I love the little feller even though I had not been fond of cats previously. So, I know this must have been hard for you. For her, too, no doubt.

I'm not a cat person by any stretch, but I feel for ya nevertheless. When my buddy Felix (a miniature schnauzer) finally feeds the tree, I'm going to be pretty bummed. I have actually thought about how and where I will bury him, and I can't imagine shoveling dirt over him either. I decided I'll wrap him in a biodegradable blanket that he likes, and cover him up that way.

Man, I am bummed just thinking about it... I can imagine you're having a particularly rough time. Wish there was more that I could say than just "I'm sorry." Hope you have forgiven your wife; it could have happened to anyone.

Being an animal lover who has lost 2 dogs to hunting accidents I know precisely what you are feeling at this moment.

Have a good drink and honor your pet's memory by recalling the great times you enjoyed together and the special way she made you feel, that's all I can offer,I'm really sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. Twenty years ago I picked up my cat which had been hit by a car and killed. The image is still in my mind.

Hey, Kerry, speaking of loses, how's your wife doing? I'm thinking about her student who commited suicide.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. One tough part of all this is that I can't show the wife how sad I am cause she's so upset and would probably take it very hard. It helps being able to express my feelings here to all of you. There is nothing to forgive, it was just an accident and no fault of hers.

Same thing happened to me... I still miss "ole' Tom" smartest animal I ever knew. Somebody actually veered off the road to hit him -- saw the tire marks.

I am very sorry for Onyx and for your wife and son. I can imagine how she must feel for hitting the poor thing. All I can do is offer condolences.

Once I was over Tom, I picked up another stray cat and even though he is not Tom, giving him a home is good compensation.

Sorry to hear about that, that's a tough one to bear witness to.

I ran over a dog a while ago - a black lab, late at night, country road, didn't even see it until I hit it - and it was emotional enough pulling the dog off the road afterwards. However, I called the police to report it from a nearby house, and when I got back, I saw some flashlights shining in the field across the road. I called out and an older man and his son (about my age - 30s) came over. They were looking for their dog, which I had just killed. I handed the man the dog's collar and he just fell to his knees in front of me and cried. I felt horrid at that moment, so I can empathize with your wife. The fact that it was your pet I'm sure makes it even harder.

It's still hard for her. Oddly, it seems to be bothering me as much as her even though I did not know him nearly as well. Funeral was last Friday and was heart wrenching. Suicide leaves so many questions.

Funny you mention getting another cat! I was just on the local humane society website looking at their listings and I saw a few lovely kitties. I think I'll surprise the wife tomorrow with a new addition to the family. Maybe it'll help ease her pain.....and mine.

HD, sorry to hear about your cat and the manner of his demise. Losing a beloved family pet is never easy. Losing it this manner makes it so much harder.

Glad you are thinking about adopting a new cat. But shouldn't you give yourself and your wife some time to grieve over the passing of Onyx?

We lost our beloved Akita, Pepper a few years ago. It took me several months before I could look for another one.

Incidentally. posting here does help. I wrote a long thread about losing Pepper and every one was extremely supportive and helpful. Then when we got Tobu and posted pics, every one was happy for me.

That's the thing about this place. We may snipe at each other, even engage in virulent attacks (as long as Hattie does not wave the "Banned" magic wand or uses the "locked thread" key). But when stuff happens, we all pull for each other, regardless of past differences.

Sounds like Onyx was one hell of a good cat. He is up in cat heaven, eating nothing but the very best cat chow and chasing after never-ending, colorful balls of yarn. Enjoy the memories of your time here with Onyx.
