Matt you need to waste more time looking at old cars!

That is called a dual cowl phaeton. Phaeton being an open car with more than a single row of seating ( that would be a roadster), and side curtains as opposed to roll-up windows.

Matt, ( or any of you) depending on where you are, you could begin your education next week--Oct 10-13 in Hershey, PA is the biggest antique car event in the world. An amazing gathering of parts vendors, cars for sale, and a stunning car show. Something close to 10,00 vendor spaces. It extends for well over a mile all along Hershey Park Drive from thr Giant Center to the Stadium.

As for the Dusenberg---I was looking at a rolling Chasis for a J last year at Hershey. I noticed they used flex discs on the driveshaft --just like on our Mercedes.

That is exactly what the Duesenberg was.

Back in the 20s, they took a few Duesenbergs over to Europe where they promptly kick the butts of the best race cars over there. Coolest cars ever.

I personally am not a fan of the open phaetons. Give me an all weather any day of the week.

The SJ could do 0-60 in under 10 seconds, weigh in over 2 tons, and could do 140 mph. That was accomplished by a dual overhead cam straight-8, and around 300 hp. These are fairly modern numbers people, all done in the late 20's.

Always plenty for sale. Superbly engineered cars meant for long,straight stretches of highway but they handle like trucks.
A Bugatti type 57 is faster,better handling and much more affordable.

Waaay more affordable,and if you get and older restoration the price comes down further.

The really affordable Buggers are the typo 40'sthe last 4 cylinder ones,which enthusiasts called "Ettore's Model T".I got a chassis and a basket'o parts for one.perhaps in 5 years after some jiggery pokery It'll get it together.

I do like the SJ and the Bugatti, and lots more from that era; however IMHO the coolest car ever is the open Alfa 8c 2900 by Touring. I'll post a pic when I find one.

Great choice. We had 2 2900's at Meadowbrook this year. I have some great shots of them. I'll dig them out and re-size them to post later on.

The Top left Duesenburg was 20 grand in 1933 (notice the front plate). By the way both the J and SJ Duesenberg used Lycoming 8-cyl inline engines, as did most of their smaller brothers the Auburns of 1931 to 1936. Although now mostly known as an aircraft engine manufacturer for small planes, Lycoming was for a number of years a part of the Cord Corp. Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg, Lycoming, Stinson and several others were all part of Cord Corp; which was renamed, after the cars were no longer produced, to Aviation Corporation. Eventually again renamed to AVCO. And now you know the rest of the story!!!

The Duesies were pretty cool. German american engineering. They were great but probably not as fast as the Mercedes 540s with blower of the same era.

The Bugattis were the Ferrari of their day and total works of engineering art.

To embellish the explanation of the dual cowl concept, the cowl is the painted body metal at the base the windshield, so in a dual cowl car there is a painted sheetmetal section under the second windshield. I think some cars of that era might have had a second window but no second cowl.

They have an excellent museum up at Auburn Indiana which is worth a visit just for the Duesenbergs but there are a couple of hundred cars on display 90% of which are not Duesies.

I stuck my head inside a Duesie up there a few years back and was astounded to find the front seat about the same size as a model A in width. The dash is nearly full all the way across with guages and at least 12" tall, all turned metal. The steering wheel is about the same size as a peterbuilt and the shifter is a long floor mounted wand that has the knob at about chest level, about the same relative position as in a Ferrari. The steering wheel reaches about 2" from the door panel on the left to about 3" from the gear shifter in the center of the car.

Most interesting car. I would love to drive one someday. Prolly never happen though.
