Star Trek reprise

Cho and Pegg board "Star Trek" feature
Friday October 12 3:27 AM ET

Korean-born actor John Cho of "Harold & Kumar" fame has been cast as Sulu in the new "Star Trek" feature, playing a role immortalized by Japanese-American actor George Takei.

Additionally, Briton Simon Pegg ("Shaun of the Dead") has boarded the Paramount project as Scotty, the ship's Scottish chief engineer.

The "Trek" casting deals appear to be closing at warp speed this week, with Eric Bana signing on Wednesday to play the movie's villain, Nero.

Already on board are Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Anton Yelchin as a young Chekov, the Russian-born navigator, as well as Zachary Quinto as a young Spock. Leonard Nimoy, who originated the role of Spock, is on board as well. Chris Pine is in talks to play the young Kirk.

Plot details are begin kept under wraps, but it is understood that the movie chronicles the early days of the Enterprise crew. The lead roles remaining to be cast are Christopher Pike, the first captain of the Enterprise, and Kirk's parents.

J.J. Abrams ("Mission: Impossible 3") is directing. The movie is expected to shoot from November to March.

Lt. Hikaru Sulu, known for his love of fencing, always was seen on deck piloting the ship next to Chekov. Takei played the character in the 1960s TV series and the 1980s movies. Cho starred as Harold in the cult hit "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle." He is reprising the role for the sequel.

Montgomery "Scotty" Scott was the ship's third-in-command and was known for his problem-solving abilities in plot-critical situations. The role was originated by James Doohan, who died in 2005.

That'd be IV. Best one in my humble opinion. The scene in the bus when Spock KO's the punker with the boom box is a classic!

Kirk: You're not exactly catching us at our best right now
Spock: That much is certain

No way. A fun one for sure, but II is by far the best... great.. classic Trek.. moral conflict, old nemesis, BATTLE.. ah... *that* was an action sci-fi movie.

Of course the next best was the first one. Vyger! (also the first time I'd seen s sexy bald woman... come to think of it, the only time)

There had been rumors of Matt Damon playing Kirk which is a joke. Not as bad as Will Smith playing Jim West though....but close.

Shatner is supposed to be on board in some fashion, but no word yet how.

its supposed to take place after Enterprise and before TOS in the time line.

They made a big deal out of the director. When it comes to Trek, you need great writing more than anything. Every Trek movie that sucked was due to bad story. Generations had HUGE potential with Kirk and Picard and they totally blew it.

The original Uhura and Checkov and a bunch of actors from the other Trek series have done an independent Trek Movie, can't remember the name, it will be shown on the internet. I have the link at work.

I know, everyone says "Wrath" is the best one. I really liked the first one too but IV is just a personal favorite.

IV was just a fun movie. A lot of commit moments.. etc. The special effects where pretty cool and the premise was good. I like IV too but 'Wrath' was such classic Kirk in angst, conflict, and Recard was as such a right bastard it...

Thumbs up Montalban as Khan

As we all know, Ricardo Montalban originated the Khan role in the 1967 episode. Not that his guest starring on a TV show in the '60s was at all unusual; he did fantastic turns on "Man from U.N.C.L.E.," "It Takes a Thief," "Mission: Impossible," "I Spy," and practically every other adventure/drama series of the time. (Those are just ones I remember; I didn't have to look 'em up. I'm sure his listing on the IMdB is huge.)

(Remarkable, too, that in a time when being ethnic could be a liability for an actor, he -- and to a lesser extent, Fernando Lamas -- was extraordinarily successful even without Anglicizing his name.)

In any case, Star Trek II and III are the best of the films, because they tell the story of the most important things ever to happen to Kirk, Spock, and the ship on which they were honored to serve.

Wrath of Khan was just incredible. The silences during the space battle are just perfect and there is something so justified about having too egomaniacs going at it and bringing their crews along for the ride

ST 6 was really good in the sense it depicted the classic Kirk-Spock-Bones relationship. The story was not that great, but the fact that these guys would not succumb to the bad Vulcan (Spocks brother) when he was trying to brainwash them, was classic. Their friendship overcame his mind games.

Which as the one where Spok melded his personality iin Bones? I have a vague memory of laughing my ass off when Bones found out about that.
