*** Vehicle's Title "Scarlet Letter" ***
The titles of my El Camino and Benz both are labeled "Previously Titled in Iowa"
What's the deal with that? Were cars, from Iowa, involved in some sort of scandal with odometers, way back when? Nobody at the DVM counters in Wisconsin seems to know...it's just how the title comes out of the printers...some sort of a Vehicle "Scarlet Letter" in a way. Anyone, in the surrounding states of Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska or South Dakota, have the same thing going on at their DMVs? How about further out? Are vehicles, titled in Iowa, somehow "branded" as "different" from the rest of the US? The interesting thing about this is: The El Camino was bought from a "dealer" in Minnesota...but the MN. title carried the "Previously titled in Iowa." statement... The Benz, originally was bought from a dealer in Cincinatti, OH., then it was bought and titled in Texas, then Iowa, then "branded" when it was first brought to and titled in Wisconsin...then I bought it with its "Iowa" stain. Any ideas/facts/stories? Anyone else have titles that have been "branded" that their vehicle(s) have been from another state?

nope, it's just how it works I guess. My escort and geo were both previously Minnesota cars... and are branded as such.
Dunno, but they've got "previously titled in minnesota" on the titles ~Nate

i'm from iowa.basically what it means is "it sucks to be you"no just kidding.i know that if a vehicle has had more then 3500 dollars damage.the title will be branded with "damage disclosure"if the car stays in iowa the title will be branded for life.i know some shady dealers will run the cars thru different states and auctions to clean a title.to rid it of the disclosure.

Just imagine the branding that the title on THIS particular white 1988 560SEL that was recently for sale in Connecticut could get!
Saddam's '88 560SEL for sale in New Haven, CT. $2,000,000 (ebay) noted on Benzworld.

A trap for the unwary.

That same kind of thing happened to a HUGE load of Katrina flood cars also.

it doesn't have to end up salvage title.if say it's a new car and gets 4000 dollars damage in an accident and fixed.the title will be branded.if they are gonna wash the title so to speak, they would want that iowa off the title completely.

That's the thing that freaked me out about buying a used car in the year or two immediately following Katrina. I wonder how many people have gotten stuck with those cars?

Wisconsin just does that. My 124 says previously titled in Washington, both of my 123 sedans say Illinois, My 116 says Michigan and my Buick says previously titled in Kentucky. I think its probably notice to a buyer to do any title searches in that state instead of Wisconsin.

Carfax scarlet lettered every car that was in a FEMA declared disaster area. That sort of sucks when you have quite a collection of cars and everyone was "branded" and we were no where near any flood waters.

From what I have personally seen of CARFAX errors, over the years, I regard their reports, as best, as a mere "suggestion"
