Nah, I never got into that trend much, I did like the videos of that semi famous guy whose name I forget. It'll come to me.

I was a fan of Lao Tzu for a long time and then I happened to see a poster about an introductory class on Sun-do (a Korean form of Chi-gong [sp]) in Seattle and hooked up with the venerable Hyunoong Sunim, a Korean monk.

The guy made quite an impression on me and I studied with him off an on for years and helped to remodel his/our center in Berkeley.

**edit** Was it Alan Watts? I'll do a search.

Interesting. I just listened to "One Bird, One Stone" on my iPod: http://www.murphyzen.com/work4.htm

The stories cover a lot of Zen Centers, various Roshi's and the movement/transformation of Zen from the 1950's until now. Korean Zen was a major topic and iirc, Sensei Sunim was mentioned.

Watts was a driving force of Zen during that time, but much of his work is from the conventional or intellectual view of Zen.

I don't wan't to say he's dissed these days, but it seems (at least Soto Zen) really has to do with the practice. Sure, we read books like "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind" - excellent read btw- but it all comes down to a consistent practice of zazen. Eventually the practice will spill over into our daily lives.

My teacher's, teacher; Danin Katagiri-roshi would say "zen is useless".

Hey man, I played baritone sax in junior high. I had played coronet (small trumpet) -- my Mom had played it in college and it fell to me. Never clicked with it then I got braces and the pushing the mouthpiece hard against the lips just didn't work. Our school had a bari sax in the closet, no one using it so I took summer classes before 9th grade (NM jr high was 7-9) and managed to land on my feet.

I was able to march with it, had to move my head up and down as the damn thing was too big to carry w/o resting it on my leg. Our band teacher must have liked that and my good marching to time cuz he put me in the middle of the first row.

Somewhere, I imagine someone has a home movie of that one parade I was in with the sax ('66), a big deal in Roswell, the county seat, and I'd love to see it.

Sunim used to talk a good bit about incorrect awakening. It's a tricky concept and I'm not sure I understand it yet completely. I believe it involves someone who gets some glimpse of truth but then doesn't get good guidance and his mind sort of goes into busy mode with that kernel of truth. (Sunim is actually the Korean word for monk but everyone calls him that rather than Hyunoong.)

Watts was interesting but I agree that he wasn't the end all teacher.

Sunim has attracted some attention here and there. The SF zen center, without a master of a teacher since Suzuki died, used to get him to come over for guest lectures as often as they could. I went to a couple, he always packed the house.

I have problems with him occasionally, at any rate I don't see much of him now as he's relocated to Korea after about 16 years in Canada and the US. He's like a star over there whereas here, he was struggling to attract good students. His being a traveling teacher, trying to spread the dharma to the west, has added to his cachet back home.

I did witness some incredible moments with him and he has a presence that is hard to miss.

It is amazing how threads here take a turn, sometimes 180 degrees, from where they start.

From the Three Amigos to a discussion of Zen to playing the sax to Humphrey Bogart.

Incidentally, in case Carl still does not know, the term "don't bogart that joint" means don't "steal" or "hog" the joint (or whatever else the subject may be).

It comes from the way Bogart would smoke a cigarette on-screen, letting it dangle from his lips for what seemed to be an eternity. So "bogart" meant "pass the joint and don't bogart it (hog it)."

Swede, I'd have posted pics of the mini-gtg but since I am working in a highly secret project, I would then have to kill everyone who saw the pics.

And no, I can't tell you what the project is...for the same reason!

I sorta prefer not having my pic posted here. It makes the GTGs all the more interesting. Plus, when people see how pathetic I look, they're likely to take my ditherings less seriously.
