Let the games begin! First baby boomer gets social security!
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071015/ap_on_go_ot/boomer_social_security_10;_ylt=AvvUtQt314CkzDL46ibGMUkE1vAI
Now is when we go broke and my generate bleeds to death trying to pay for this. They should role the age back to at least 75. They are going to have to do something, we flat out cannot afford it.

I've looked at what my 401(k) plan will be doing for me when I'm 67...squat.
I've already planned to work to 82...the SS and 401(k) won't work too well until that time. The reason? I'm not banking on the SS to be there when I retire...I'm doing my planning without SS being in the mix. And, if it's there, well, just more to pass on to the government for paying taxes and the like. Anything for the kids/grandkids/great-grandkids? Doubt it...it will either be eaten up by the pols or some disease will wittle the savings down to nothing...then some perky Candy-Striper will trip over my cord and unplug me. Judging by how well the kids today can count change if there's a machine telling 'em how much to give you, I'm a "hop, skip and a trip" away from heaven 'cause I'm sure the Candy-Striper won't know "chit-from-shinola" about how to put a plug back into the wall.

I know I'll be screwed out of SS. I'm only 22, it's sure to be completely wiped out by the time I'm eligible to apply. Roosevelt made a big mistake.
I started my 401(k) this year. Swift Transportation will match my contributions dollar-for-dollar, up to 3% of my pay. |

In so many other horrible, disgusting 3rd world countries, with all their faults, at least in those places Senior citizens still are cherished, loved and revered for their wisdom. They are such wonderful people I would surmise that the trillions of dollars of national treasure that has been so recklessly squandered on the Iraq adventure would be more properly first questioned than what is spent on Social Security for our senior citizens to attempt to live out their golden years with a modicum of dignity.

Well, for the sake of historical context, politicians have been spending the "Social Security Trust Fund" for a generation or so instead of investing it or hell ... just sitting on it. What they have been doing is spending that money on other activities and placing IOU's into the place where money should have been.
So what happens when the IOU's (gov bonds) need to get paid-off (mature) AND us old fart baby-boomers start withdrawing our SS payments? You young suckers ... er .... taxpayers, are going to have to work harder and longer to pay for politicians and us graybacks having a hell of a ride. You'll be paying-off gov bonds AND meeting the SS payroll. Good luck with that. I'll be in Bimini sipping from a drink with chunks of tropical fruit speared by parasols and plastic swords. Bot |

I've always thought that nobody is looking out for me like I'm looking out for me. This is as good a reason why universal healthcare (as provided for by the federal government) is a mistake.
I wonder if we'll be able to spend those IOU's for food, medicine, and other neccessities?

I do feel for the younger generations who will have to pay for the gubmint's indiscretion with OUR money. Yet there are those who wonder why so many of us are opposed to more federal intervention into our daily lives. I can only speak for my own family, but every effort has been made for the aging members to stay in their own houses until their last day, with whatever expenses (most of them prepared for their own golden years), aid or care they needed taken care of and with regular visits by the other family members. While I don't disagree with Jim that seniors in general aren't treated as they should be, most of the forgotten seniors have been forgotten by their own families who shed their responsibilities to take care of their own.

By the time twenty-year olds can retire and get social security, they'll have to be 100 years old.

Boomers paid into the system, they are not the problem. The profiteers are the problem.
A solution that will not be aired in the popular press is to employ more people in the US in higher paying jobs so that they will be paying enough into the system to support it. Hey? |

Cast aside what are you talking about? When SS was started most people died before 65, so the gov didn't plan on paying for long. Now people live longer, so the age should be adjusted. SS was never ment to be a government retirement plan. It was to keep poor people from starving for the last couple years of their life. Iraq has nothing to do with this, they have been spending the SS money since it was formed. Its the gov's fualt for not planning ahead. I'm not going to see a penny of SS and would opt out of the whole thing in a heartbeat if I could. The government is going to have to do something, because we just can't afford it.
