Gasoline: The MANS drink.

I've done very few things dumb in my youth (we all have, and we all will/have joked about the when we're in the 40/50s') This is by far; the dumbest (well; as far as I remember.)

I got home from work yesterday (yeah - time and a 1/2) replaced the alternator; re-patched some rusted fuel lines; the common stuff on a northern car of this vintage. Started her up, and she started spewing gas.

no!; she drove yesterday. all I've done was crossed a couple of lines since (because I thought they were backwards) turned her off; jacked it up. Then I'd realized what I've done - I've crossed the evaporator line with the fuel return - cause as soon as the ass end was up; the charcoal canister started spewing gas. Clamped that line, and decided it was a good idea to siphon the remaining gas out of the tank before I touched the line again.

The next hour become a blur. It didn't take as nearly much pressure as I thought it would to prime the siphoning process. Before I knew it; I had a mouthful of gas - some of which was forced down into my throat.

Luckily; it was less than 2oz. Poison control said to eat as many tums/rolaids as I felt necessary. Which was good; because every time I burped, it'd be Gasoline fumes (NOT present at all.) If I started cough; it'd be a trip to the ER - the stomach can handle a little gas - but so much as a drop in the lungs will kill you.

That's my story for the weekend. I'm still living; and the car's still running.

I tried that once in my younger, more desperate years. First inhale through the tube was enough to convince me that this was no longer an option.

A suction gun is about $12. These work great for starting a siphon. Always have one on hand when siphoning gasoline.

No smoking while burping gas fumes.
I keep some clear hose available in case I ever have to siphon gas.

best little siphon tool i made was out of a old electric fuel pump i got from a junk yard .. and two long wires soldered to a cigarette lighter 12v adapter .. just plug the pump in ..feed the gas line into the tank and flip the switch .. viola ..fast action siphon pump ..

or you could have just used clear hose :D .. gotta love gas taste ..nothing like making your lips feel dry ..and that burn in ya belly ..

Lacking any kind of pump, just put a long enough hose in as far as you can so it fills with fuel, put your thumb on the end, pull it out and let it flow. The fuel in the part of the line hanging out will start the siphoning action.

I was going to say that . . . I've gotten a mouthful of gas before. It only takes one to get you thinking about alternate methods of siphoning . . .

My father word's right after I ran inside:

"At least it's unleaded"

A little siphon hand pump is on my list for the parts store. And I had some semi-clear hose also - I didn't even think to use. It sure did clean me right out - I woke up with the worst stomach ache ever; after four trips to the bathroom, all was well.

forget gas, try some diesel... not too much fun either

I've practically bathed in the stuff ;)
