Dog Training?

Is it easy to train your dog to run with you instead of pulling you?

Heel is what I use for her to stand by my side. Commands don't mean anything to a dog unless they are taught the command. When running, I snatch the lease much like reigns on a horse and give a click with my voice. When I get ready to stop I give heel so she will come alongside.

To be a little more serious, when the dog pulls on you, you snatch the hell out of the choke collar man. If she does it three times in a row, hold her mouth shut until she whines. I didn't have to do this with my dog, but it is pretty easy to break a dog of pulling.

The wife didn't like the idea of a choke collar. I brought it up. I said fine I'll choke her with my own two hands. That didn't go over well.

I used the 'heel' command as well, with a choke chain. Our dog was a beast though, 150+ lb chuvatch (similar to a great pyrenees). He would basically run with me and match my pace. After a few sessions, they seem to 'get it'. If he pulled ahead, I would give a slight tug on the choke chain.

I do remember a few times when the choke chain accidentally sipped down his neck and onto his shoulders...then I simply became a fun object for him to tow...

Your wife doesn't know anything about dog training, so you shouldn't take advice from her.

Choke collars aren't cruel, and they don't hurt the dog.

Every book on dog training I've looked at recommends the use of a choke collar. Even Uncle Matty on PBS recommends a choke collar.

See his website:

I'll try to convince her again. Just a slight poke is all they feel right? The device is definitely misnamed.

I'm not fond of the choke collar. They tend to hurt the airpipe. I prefer a prong collar. It doesn't choke them and it is like a sharp slap to the face. Gets their attention.

I can understand your problem. It could always be referred to as a 'training collar'...

I think that's what I meant. Prong collar, not choke collar. That's what I want to use. Thanks.
