Sports is showbusiness ... Really?
Rasheed says NBA "wanted'' Cavs, LeBron in finals
Saturday, Oct 27, 2007 7:09 am EDT It may have only been the end of the exhibition season, but Detroit Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace was in mid-season form. "I still don't think they (Cavaliers) beat us, we beat ourselves," Wallace said. "And I think we also fell victim to that personal NBA thing where they are trying to make it a world game and get (television) ratings. They wanted to put their darling in there (the NBA Finals) and they did, and look what ended up happening. "This game ain't basketball anymore, it's entertainment," Wallace said. "It's starting to get like the WWF. There ain't no real wrestling anymore either. It's all fake." |

...said Rasheed as he was on his way to his bank to drop off another large check.

I'm mostly surprised that this many people commented on a NBA thread.....I thought there were only 3 or 4 fans remaining (a recurring theme on the Sports Guy's columns on ESPN2).
Granted, Sheed is pretty good at ruffling feathers....but still. I am excited for the season to start, with playoff baseball now being over (and as neither a Colts or Pats fan). The Celtics new (although old) look, Shaq's last shot with Wade, Kobe's potential trade, Year 2 of AI and Carmelo together, Lebron's maturation, the Suns/Mavs, chance for the Warriors to prove last year wasn't a fluke.......should be a good season. I wanted to see Oden/Durant debate play itself out....but not this year. I won't even discuss my Sixers, why bother?

I would encourage everyone commenting on professional sports to attend some professional sporting events as part of their research.

You fly private air but won't spring for club level tickets? No warm beer there and they are included with the price of the ticket.

My partner & I went to the Eagles/Bears game last Sunday. The sports side: A very dull game, save for the last five minutes. The entertainment side: lots of tailgating, vendors hawking everything under the sun, bands outside the stadium (one singer gave a pretty good imitation of Eagles coach Andy Reid), fireworks, apparel sales, etc. On the drive home, we were talking about the afternoon, and after agreeing on the boring (and seemingly lackluster play), he commented, "Yeah, but it was a good time. These games are ....events." Entertainment. I probably miss your point JD, but the reason to attend live games to do research is to experience the entire "event", sporting and entertainment elements combined? Or to experience the athletic efforts up close for a better grasp of the effort put forth? BTW Howie, 2 dogs and 2 Bud lites at the game got a couple of bucks back from a $20.00 But, hey, Philly is basically a blue collar town. |
