There was one heavy hitter arguing against abortion on non-theological grounds, Nat Hentoff. He was basing his view on the fact that a fetus was a person at conception as I recall. He was also arguing against the death penalty and war, trying to separate himself from the fundamentalists who were against abortion but in favor of the death penalty.
There was nobody arguing abortion is clearly good. The opposite side to the anti-abortionists were arguing for the lack of clear moral argument against abortion hence the right for women to make the decisions for themselves.

That is the weakest argument in the entire debate, this "my own body crap" is fed from men that are exactly as you describe scared to say something. The pro life lobby is mostly women BTW its the only lobby the 1.5 million aborted children have.

Scientifically speaking, a conceived fetus is as alive as you or me.

Religiously speaking, the idea of when life begins has been commensurate with scientific understanding of the time. When women were impregnated via "vapors" there was much leeway. Now, it is generally understood by science and religion that at conception a life is begun. The respect for life has always been consistent.

The double murder while pregnant is an interesting situation. I remember when Scott Peterson (?) was having his trial there was a small contingent of the anti-life group who didn't want him charged with his son's murder. It was a pretty small but vocal contingent.
